I am a one man shop and can't afford yet to go with an argosy desk. However, I need something larger, having used a smaller desk with two 4U racks for years. I do have the side car so rack space is generous but workspace is not and I not only mix but also do my day job at my desk.
Looks like I'd have to spend $1500 just to get started with a decent size like with the Rab ProRack M88. Even then the workspace depth is not awesome.
So, I have ordered three natural colored Gator 4U desktop racks. I am going to grab a natural (Pine colored) desktop (72"x36") and build legs and supports with black iron piping. All in, it will be about $700 which is crazy considering the end result: 12U's on the desk and lots of real estate to work on.
Anyone done something similar?

You can buy premade legs. I did something similar recently.

I built my desk by using two (store bought) 12u rolling racks. Those are the “legs”, then I used a nice piece of 5/8” plywood, sanded, stained and clear coated. And then built two 4u racks on top of the desk.
The racks were the most expensive part. They were about $500 each. But I figured if I outgrow this setup, or move to a new space that needed a different setup then I could take the table top off and use the racks in a new configuration.

I see a 1.5" butcher block top at HD for $169. Seems really heavy and don't think I need 1.5"

I used 1.5” butcher block that I got from Home Depot. It was 4’x8’ but I cut it down to 42”x7’ if I remember correct. I don’t think I would want to use 5/8.. seems like it would have some flex, and beyond that not much meat for the leg screws.

The plywood holds up good and doesn’t really flex but I’ve thought of adding a middle support leg for safety. If I did it again I’d buy butcher block

I will use the cut scraps to 1) do a center brace, left to right and 2) build up where the legs will attach. It will make those places 1.5". will clear coat on top and add a front trim. I'm told I should be bale to stand on it when done - lol. Now I have choose the legs off amazon. i also got 3ea 4U Gator racks. They have arrived so I have to get busy.

OK, this is what I did. 3/4 Maple plywood with doubled thickness (glued and nailed) underneath ends and a spar along the entire back for legs and to prevent bowing. Metal legs from amazon. Maple formica on top - likely didn't have to spend for maple plywood but was originally going to stain. Gator 4-space racks that match well enough. Desk is 6' x 3'. Plenty of room for mixing, tracking keys, ding the day job, etc. Seems sturdy and rigid. Speakers were already this wide. Sounds fine and measurements in Sonarworks don't show any glaring problems - my trusty 20yr old foam (just because) and GIK bass traps (more out of picture). IMG_0622.heic (1.72 MB)

Neat. clean and tidy, @robsmith Nice!. I have a similar set-up, only mine has more of a "what a two-year old leaves behind after getting into the toy chest" kind of vibe. How far part are those Dyns and how far do you sit from them? Mine are 48" apart and and 42" from my ears ..aiming slightly behind my head. Your's look like they're 70+" apart.

They are over 6' apart, pointing behind me. I can back up and fix the triangle. There is no shortage of level or clarity and honestly, whether up or back, I don't hear a difference. Same with the Genelecs. Sonarworks tends to agree with me on placement meaning, no bad resonances or cancellations.
