my music partner has a nice collection of Michael jolly modified mics. they are our main mics for a lot of sources. mic of ribbons, ldc and sdc mics with mikes mods.
we've had only one trouble in the past and mike fixed it, paid for return postage and wished us the best and it cost nothing. full warranty. what a legend. superb mic as well his nt2a mod.
recently, the ntk he modded started to get a noise floor. we have no idea so sent it to mike......
he replied to use that he was flat out and unable to fault find the mike so has sent us his personal ntk with one of a kind housing mod and hoped we were ok with that. he said he'd keep ours and mod it later and pointed out his was a pristine mic. so now we have a one of a kind mic..... :-)
oh he paid for postage again as well.
and I live in Australia.........
now I ask,
am I OK with that?
FARK YEAH!!
what a legend!
credit where credit is due.

I know Dr Bill loves his mics. The SDC's are nice and I would like to hear his mics that sound u67 ish. I think they are the SDC's with a special LDC capsule.

It's great to read about that level of service in a field where quantity is starting to win over quality and service. Michale Joly has been very helpful to me in the past and literally just for the heck of it (and the fact that he is a really super guy). I'm not surprised at the service you received. Budget conscious mic buyers are well served having a look at his product. His MC012 mod is practically a legend all by itself, and his other mods look like the real deal to me.

I'be been considering a pair of Oktava SDC's from him. I have a stereo pair and they sound great. it was when I put them on acoustic guitar they made me smile. I also use them on toms.
warm smooth and clear is how I would describe them.

It's interesting to read all these huzzahs about his mods, but people should still remember that he started his for-profit business using the not-for-profit mods found on DIY sites.. For that, he'll never see business from me.

For that, he'll never see business from me. Ok... but consider that the standard in electric guitars for many many years are Fender, and Leo Fender stole much of his design basics from Paul Bigsby. And...consider that the standard in electric guitar amplifiers has also been Fender. And Leo Fender directly copied most of his design work from the Western Electric designs/schematics. And consider that Jim Marshall's amplifiers amps were based on the Fender Bassman, just turned upside down and output section modded to accept EL34 and KT66 powertubes instead of 6L6's. Then consider the pro audio world and how most everything is based on a 1073, 312, LA2a, 1176 or a Neumann microphone. And... we're still following that model today. Steal, refine, improve, sell as something new.

True, but stealing a design is one thing (and bad, no matter who did it or how long it's been), stealing a not-for-profit attempt at spreading education is even lower IMHO. People put those mods up online for others to benefit from intellectually, not monetarily. Besides, using examples of people doing bad things to defend another person's bad behavior doesn't exactly work, ya know?

People put those mods up online for others to benefit from intellectually, not monetarily. Look, I'm a fumbling mess soldering anything but cables, patch bays or guitar electronics... so anyone who can mod a mic for me/build a replica kit/repair a unit, no matter who came up with the schematics, is going to benefit from ME financially... cos I'm the shaggin' shits at doing it meself. Besides, using examples of people doing bad things to defend another person's bad behavior doesn't exactly work, ya know? Not if it shows precedent (at the least) or common practice in the electronic design side of the music equipment industry. This isn't felonious crime here.

I have a pair of Joly k47h on modded 0112 bodies. They've won many shoot outs with many vintage and new mics of many nationalities. On many sources. I love them.
