Wondering if anyone is using a gaming keyboard for assigning macro buttons to control your DAW? I was pretty close to buying a Stream Deck to program macros but then I thought, “why not buy a keyboard with a few assignable buttons”? The Stream Deck looks awesome but I don’t really have the desktop space and I could do 80% of what I want to do with 4-5 hot keys.
The only downside I see is that they all seem to be Windows keyboards and it would annoy me to no end to have the command/alt keys reversed. Would love to find a Mac Formatted Keyboard with extra programmable keys but they don’t seem to exist.
Anyone doing something similar? Any alternatives I’m overlooking?

Not that i know of. You'd have to use a PC keyboard.
But honestly, just get a stream deck. I love it. And it's worth the desk space. You will not regret it.
can always try it on your phone first too with their app.

It’s crazy how hard I can over think this stuff lol. The new SD + looks awesome with the rotary encoders. My last thought though is maybe I should compare some single fader DAW controllers. Looks like the Behringer x touch has some function keys that can be programmed. It sure about the Presonus, doesn’t look like it from the pics. But that might be a smarter way to go.

Would a gaming mouse work? They usually have programmable keys. Idk about compatibility I'm definitely grabbing a gaming mouse, having just 2-3 more buttons/scroll wheels will help. Just holding off till I figure out the keyboard situation since a lot of these run off macro software that allow you to easily customize the setup...so I'd rather have both devices pair and run off the same software.

For mice, the classic track ball is basically king IMO for DAWs. I've tried a few other things and all roads are leading me back to that.
If you need faders or just one, then yeah one of those controllers isn't bad at all.
There is also Loopedeck which is similar to Stream Deck but a bit more focused on creators. Our Video editors use those.
