I know a couple of peeps here are on ua forum and Drew’s preview of luna changes. As I track with OB not ua plugs, as luna sessions were tethered to apollo and as logic works fine, I don't use luna.
Could overview the benefits of luna changes ?
Thx!

1. You can now use Luna with Core Audio. It still requires that you own an Apollo, but you can set Luna to run on Core Audio, which means you can mix on your laptop without an interface attached, or use any interface of your choosing.
2. There is now DSP/native switching within Luna. No copy and paste anymore. You can just click to switch between them. Also it will automatically shuffle between DSP and native as you arm or unarmed tracks. The automatic nature of this is pretty great.
3. Import session data now exists.

Like what I've seen from the Luna 1.4 update

Thx!
I look at luna as a logic user who doesn‘t track with plugs
Using core audio is like logic and I can already use any interface
Switching is convenient or in my case, I just load uad2 or uadx, but if i sold my octo, I would just use uadx?
Importing session date is for people who didn’t track in luna but want to mix in it : facilitates transferring the files?

I mean, instruments were already at 128 in Luna, but if you've got Amplitube instantiated as a plugin, then, yeah, you'd be able to run that at 128 instead of the 512 that it has been up to this point. At least that's how I understand it. Doesn't Amplitube have a standalone feature where you can then route that to your DAW, effectively operating with two different buffers (Amplitube standalone buffer and your DAW buffer) anyway?

switchable buffer for tracking vs mixing now ? Yes. But Luna has always had two separate and simultaneous buffers anyway. This will mostly be of benefit to native users and those using core audio.

Now let’s go all the way and meet/beat AVID at the hw insert game. Get me Studio One style hw delay compensation (or even Logic’s which is more clunky but works), mix that with auto dsp/native switching, ability to run on Core Audio? We’re getting close Luna, getting very close. Just missing the biggest piece! (For me)

I've said it before, but I think Avid more directly competing with UA in recent times has actually resulted in improvements everyone wants on BOTH platforms. Everybody wins.

You mean like AVID Carbon straight up repurposing the x8 chassis? Shots fired! I bet that ruffled some feathers in UA world.

Yeah, it's seemed pretty clear for a while now that Avid is aiming for some of UA's market share with Carbon. I think Avid views the market saturation of Apollos, coupled with Luna (for free), as a serious threat to Pro Tools domination on the DAW side of things. What happens when all of these musicians with a Twin decide that Luna is their DAW of choice, if for no other reason than that it's free and it came with the Twin?

I tried that yesterday - changing AT5's outputs to Virtual 1-2...but I got major latency in Luna...maybe I was doing it wrong.

The updates sound great to me.
I'm a Logic user. I prefer editing in Logic to how it works in Luna. Comping tracks is sooo much better in Logic.
But the UAD2/X switching is an awesome progression, and yeah it's aimed at PT options.
The session importing is a big deal for those who collaborate with others. Or if you want to rebuild a project and import certain settings.
The coolest thing I got from the option to switch to Core Audio options was if you get a project sent in PT, you don't have to export those tracks as stems to mix them in Luna. You can setup PT as an input source. If they can get that going with other DAWs it would make life move so much faster. Have a client that tracked the start of a project in Garage Band? Just set it up as the source and import directly into Luna.

Yeah, true...comping is another thing that has to be implemented.

I never run out is dsp (m1/sharc) here, why is switching important, an I misunderstanding something ?

I never run out is dsp (m1/sharc) here, why is switching important, an I misunderstanding something ? It's mainly important if you want to track using UAD2 plugins for real time low latency. I have historically tracked full bands and easily 16-20 inputs at once. And I know you don't do this, but I often put compression plugins on the way in. It works for me. I do use some unison plugins for their tone shaping. Etc. You didn't like it, but a lot of people do. But I can also see keeping my reverbs on DSP for the most part when mixing. But if I have to go somewhere and don't want to take the Satellite or Apollo with me, I can now just switch the plugin to native. We'll have to see how it runs, but on the video it seemed very useful.

Better yet, with DSP switching, you can basically start mixing from day 1, all without having to commit to any of it and all without worrying about having a full mix's worth of plugins going and trying to figure out how you're gonna track something without running into DSP/CPU/buffer/latency issue. The computer carries the load for playback, all at a comfortable buffer, while Apollo DSP carries the load at low latency for any tracks that are armed, without having to worry about managing any buffers. It's the best of both worlds. Not that you couldn't already do this with native plugins or satellites for playback, but this does it in a much more elegant way. It's more or less like the hybrid engine that Pro tools has gone to. Same concept. The difference is that you're doing it with UAD plugins, versus whatever aax plugins PT currently has in the roster.

Nice, thx guys, that does sound intriguing.
I’d be lying if I said I am not curious about the next apollo.
With all this corporate change and UA girding its recording loins to do avid battle, what if, they have pulled out the design stops and drop a much more high end like apollo or maybe a 2 channel mastering converter box?
I’m mostly recording myself so love the directness of one great pre, a few very good mikes, my stam adf and patching to my aurora N. But, I get it when pros say how they value the ua workflow, quality, etc., I still wonder as ua fleshes out luna, if it will drop its own mix controller, fully automatable, recall, etc..
Its the missing piece, if they are out to take space/ clients from Avid?

Its the missing piece, if they are out to take space/ clients from Avid? I mean here's the thing... as much as UA tactics can be annoying, it's a bowl of cherries compared to Avid. I think everyone can agree on that. So I'm still pulling for UA to rock that boat. The interesting thing about a UA hybrid DSP/Native model is that you could potentially use it with other DAW's other than Luna if they designed it that way. Most DAW's already allow you to offload to DSP's, not a huge stretch. That would be a real challenge to Carbon. Even if they only just force Avid to lower their prices that would be a win. $5k or whatever for 8 channels of stock preamps and pretty much nothing else is pretty pricey.

Good decision by UA.
Also, there's a quote from Drew on the ua forum that makes me think that soon enough they will sell Luna as a normal DAW and not tied to owning an Apollo:
The quote: "This allows us to open it to Apollo users only and use this as a sort "public beta" of LUNA without Apollos. Trust me, it makes sense."
