I organised a demo of an M7 for a weekend. Boy I was so excited unboxing the unit, I got it all wired in and started using it in a mix of a song. And to my complete surprise I was totally underwhelmed. I have no idea what I thought this box was going to add to my mixes but I found I prefered my slew of UAD, Relab and TC reverbs which I concluded emulated something of a different type of reverb that’s more of an effect, more steamy and modulated, possibly more grainy. Now with UAD’s Capital and especially the Motown chambers I’m beyond happy with plugin reverb (it’s come a long way) That said, I did think the ability of the M7 to simulate realistic spaces was superb and I imagine anyone involved in film music and Post would find a couple of M7’s essential to their set up!

Same thing happened to me with my first set of high end preamps. I spent a LOT of money on a set of Neve 1290's and expected angels to come down from heaven and personally caress my tone. They didn't. It sounded mostly the same as my cheap preamps with just a little more clarity.. Mics, other gear, even softwares have been the same. It turns out that the hype for pretty much everything far outpaces the actual qualities of the gear and expectations are usually built too high to ever be satisfied.

My experience has been very mixed. I was totally blown away by my Coil CA-70, BAE 1073D and Millennia STT-1 but totally underwhelmed by a Focusrite Red 7 and AMS Neve 1O73 DPA. I’m a huge fan of my Retro STA and Thermionic Phoenix MP and was completely underwhelmed by a UA LA2A RI. Some one probably feels the opposite, corny phrase but …. beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Marvin Gaye would’ve been MG regardless of the mic and pre. Great gear just makes the process faster and doesn’t impede anything.

Also, collecting is a very real thing and something in its own right.
I’ve been “collecting” my gear and instruments for 25 years and it’s something I’m very proud of and value in its own right.
In addition to all the hard work and effort that went into choosing and affording them ….
I find the hand made boutique gear and instruments have their own energy, not to be too metaphysical but the hand and energy of the artisan that made and designed them - is kinda in them in an odd way - I admire their work every bit as much as I admire a favourite album.
Odd but true for me personally.

And I still fight this now…I’ve been going back and forth on a two pieces of gear that clone the same unobtanium original. One is half the price of the other. I did a bunch of tests and I could pick them out for their different tonal characteristics - and maaaaybe the more expensive one was a little more effortless…and maybe the cheaper one did intro some harsher midrange…but I don’t think 99% of listeners would even notice. That being said, I kept the more expensive one because I know me.
Now I’m considering selling my H2 0011 just because I’m thinking “I could get something that’s probably just as good for half the price…but I haven’t experienced some of the complaints I’ve had in the past with pres - zero headroom issues. It’s like an abusive relationship. I forget all the bad things and only remember the good lol.

I’m deep into the 80/20 rule perspective.
By the time you have: a good room, mikes, pres, comps, and conversion, further sonic gains get increasingly costly for lessoning improvements.
Just have to figure out, where your sweet spot is .

I think I would also be expecting some sort of sonic magic, but now that I think about it I’m not totally sure what that would be. It’s not like I’m unhappy with the reverbs I have. There’s no reverb problem I’m trying to solve.

I guess that’s because you give them space in your relationships ?

Man, on first reflection, that’s really deep and really resonates!
