I'm a big fan of Eric's work and have really enjoyed following along in his journey selling the studio in California and moving to Vermont. The ordeal he goes through archiving tapes before he moved was really something 🤣. The new barn being converted looks like it's going to be a kiler space! Anyway, just thought I'd share in case anyone else is interested.

I'm also a big fan. Glad he's back. I think the thing I was most excited about was that he just produced a new Nickel Creek album. The last one he produced was my favorite.such a talented guy.

I started watching those but then found his video on making monitoring work in a temp space. REALLY enlightening.

also, I have known of him but just learned he mixed No One Knows by QotNSA. That is such an interesting mix and song in many ways such as the dryness, cymbals being held unnaturally back in the mix to keep the aesthetic and... the lead break being classic Black Sabbath. Pretty cool.
What mixes of Eric's do you like?

Eric first came on my radar in 97 with the first Third Eye Blind album. He's been making great stuff for a long time now!

Love his channel and the UTA gear. Brilliant dude and one of the few people I'd watch front to back no matter how many um's, lol. So glad he's back and going full force.
His new hybrid setup is super interesting too. That summing box is a great solution if you're not already deep in a hybrid setup.
And getting the hanger door motor to work... that's some pretty cool shit right there from one of his main guys.

There were only supposed to be two.” Taking her comment out of context, but the tone of voice is perfect: What husband can’t relate to her question while a wife is looking over his shoulder as he opens a box that just came into the studio?? LOL!

I spent many frustrated days trying to transfer tape just like he was doing, syncing pt with 2 locked 827’s and it was no party. I’m a patient person but definitely came close to ripping the lynx out of the rack and throwing it across the room a few times.
I at least got a chuckle out of the fact that others have shared in my pain hahah. Unfortunately the transfers weren’t for anything super cool hahah!
Just spent a 5 hour plane ride watching his vids - passed the time nicely. And free streamable WiFi for the win. The future is now!

As much as I am jealous of what he's building.... (It's a dream of anyone in this biz to have a facililty like that!)
I give him a year...or a few at best.
One brutal winter, the cost of doing business in that room will NEVER BE WORTH IT! NEVER, NEVER, EVER. Haha
Heating, snow plowing the driveway, cooling, etc, etc, etc...
He could however work in that space for 7 / 8 months a year!
Living in the Northeast all my life, I know what it's like heating a 4000 sq foot room for one vocalist, or guitar player... Insane. And I only had 14 foot ceilings, NOT LIKE HIS SPACE!
Personally he should have put radiant heat in there, as he was incorrect about having to remove the slab...I've done it a few times already. Just install, a new hardwood floor on top of the slab that has the tubes already installed, they just fit together and is relatively easy to install! Works amazingly well, and keeps a constant temperature at much less cost.
But no matter, I do wish them all the best!

Pretty sure it's a retirement plan/project while of course still working as he can or more like...want to. But yeah, we have a hall like that in Montana. It's no joke. And to be fair he's been there for 2 years now so he should know. He has talked about heating and such and with all the solar panels on the building he is still coming out ahead for the moment i guess.

I like big spaces. I liked the views of his old studio. Looking forward to seeing the finished project.

Well, if it's all or mostly solar, then I guess he'll be fine?

Blackdawg, nobtwiddler or anyone else here....do you guys know how Solar works for getting clean AC for studio use? Sorry for the off topic. From what I remember most of the modern solar systems are DC. Including battery storage, but considering some of the very finicky applications I have heard are using solar it shouldn’t be a problem. I’m sure at the very least his voltage regulation is better than what we see off the line. Like everything else it comes down to how much your willing to spend.

Blackdawg , nobtwiddler or anyone else here....do you guys know how Solar works for getting clean AC for studio use? Sorry for the off topic. The best panels are DC. And you use a solar controller and ideally batteries to store to manage it. It's not cheap to do up front. But, depending on where you live and your local utility provider, you can make it back with net metering. Don't know what Eric is using as he hasn't shown us that in his videos. My dads system though uses a Solark controller/inverter to manage it all. It's expensive but a very cool piece of kit. He has his set to run the house and shop off of batteries during peak metering hours so his bill gets no extra charges. But if you have a good inverter and such, power should be very clean. www.sol-ark.com/sol-ark-15k-all-in-one/

But almost NONE of them are using batteries. (Will check out your link - thx!) I can't say "none", cause you can request it at great cost (and at that point it's no longer "free", or they up your monthly charge dramatically). There's precious little about studio's running on Solar that I have been able to find. I wouldn't mind doing it cause we have crazy sun coverage here, and plenty of S/W facing roofline, but I can't seem to get any straight answers other than - "should be fine". Right now, I've got the absolutely best and cleanest AC I've ever had in any studio.

But will be totally dependent on the inverter they use. You'd want a really clean Sine wave inverter. And of course they don't want you to have batteries, then you can do like I was saying and really capitalize on when you use grid power, if at all. I know once my house is done, solar is on the agenda but with batteries, more so for loss of power issues here than anything. But battling the peak charge hours is handy money savings.
