I'm frustrated with the Pro Tools click. You can either accent 1 or have divisions and subdivisions and that just pisses me the hell off.
Besides hooking up the old SR16 (which I'm not above) what options are there.
I really want something super fast and easy to get a few sounds happening, will adjust with session tempo and not make me more annoyed.
Whatcha using?

yeah, i too prefer a shaker or simple drum rhytmus. most of the times some logic loops are fine or i just tap-pad the kick and snare with my fingers on midipads. makes recording much more fun than with a simple click.

I've got this I must try it for a click track - great idea. I've been giving myself the quaver subdivision as well as the crotchet recently when tracking drums and I like the effect it has on my groove, SSS2 will be perfect for this.

Addictive Drums is on every session just to be an alternative to a click. I make a simple 1-2 bar pattern and it works out great.

I'm pretty ignorant of VIs so how does this work? It says it only run on Kontakt so it's useless in Cubase, ProTools, etc?

Yeah you just use it in the (free) Kontakt plug-in shell.
It smokes anything else I’ve tried as far as groove-time-keeping. I used to spend forever setting up tambourine and shaker loops to track to. Regular “tick tick tick” click tracks are a non starter for me, I hate em. SSS is super fast and flexible and I’m tracking in no time.

I like the idea of adding some percussion in the background of a mix when needed, like how a subtle delay can affect the groove in a cool way.

I'm still concerned about an accent on the ONE. Would I need to load another instrument into Kontakt for that?

I like using an Alesis drum machine, set to a simple beat and recorded a bit longer than the song will be. There is also a drum machine built into my Kurweil keyboard that works well, but it doesn't do odd time that good.

I love tambs and shakes for doing a singer songwriter where I know there won’t be much production.
But…
If I’m playing bass or acoustic on something, I need to know exactly where the beats are so I can either be right up on it if there is programming, or to be able to place my notes on, ahead, or behind the beat ever so slightly in order to make things feel right. The only way I’ve found to make that happen is with a super sharp general click. The shakes and tambs are just too spread out for me to know exactly where to put the notes.
Anybody else feel that?

I pop on a basic beat sometimes when tracking instead of just the shaker. It helps with very dynamic songs.

A slightly different route: I use the output of a Boss Dr. Beat going into the aux in of the headphone amp. Works great.

I work with a lot of younger musicians and they don't always have a great concept of subdivisions, and that's why I'm looking to have something a little more fluid like SSS as an option. For years I set my own metronome for eighth notes when I was practicing and I have young drum students do the same to help them get better with divisions.

Speaking of eighths...Include the threat of playing Henry the 8th/Herman's Hermits over and over. Until they're in time! That'll learn them. Chris
