Useful Arts Tube preamps have got me thinking.
HAs anyone used these preamps?
I think I might want to dip my toes in the water in the SFP30. I think the idea of using a single mic and then shaping it bit more with the colour for drive on a variety of sources is a great idea. You know vocals then colour the same mic for backing vocals/harmonies. Maybe there are heaps of products already out there like this - RND Silk knob for example . But I think I might want to try it. I bought another hi end Tube Stereo preamp recently that just sits in the box as I thought it could do this job but does not.
Just curious to see if someone has tested this preamp out . Cheers

When I was looking for a variable character pre a dealer mentioned this unit - but I never got around to demoing it. I ended up buying the Coil CA-70 which has a similar variable colour knob (varies the circuits negative feedback iirc) The Coil is amazing and of course they now have a great reputation. At some point I would like to demo the SFP-30 and compare to the Coil.

Good looking unit, at $3 grand not cheap, does anyone know about build quality to support price point ?
Certainly looks high quality.

Here in the cheap seats... Their Hornet, is a later 2023 consideration. But still very interesting to follow their High End offering. Chris

Hello Hello to the summoning gods of Real Gear. I've had the SFP60 for quite a while and I think it sounds quite good and is very easy to use. I often do exactly as the OP mentioned and use the color control in variation on vocals. The Lead vocal gets more color and then less color is used on backing. I've used it on a variety of sources, but tend to lean on it most for vocals. That's a bit of a conceptual thing for me, keeping the tube input chain for the vocal to give it something extra. Though the pre sounds really good for guitars, keys, bass, and the bit I've done with drums (overheads and I think BD and SD). I feel like I did some horns with it, but I may be imagining that... I mainly wanted to get a nice tube unit for use specifically with my U87. I always liked it more with the VoxBox that I traded off a long while ago than with any other preamp, including the GTQII that replaced the VB. The SPF60 100% did the trick and I love the U87 again. There's something about that mic and tubes that really does it for me. I discussed this with a few friends at the time and they all agreed, well, except the ones who said "I just grab my 67..." I also have the Useful Arts tube DI and just about every bass part I've done since it's been here has been with it. The brilliant part of that box is the simple shelf EQ. It's my opinion that Useful's next product should be an EQ.

And I happen to know a guy selling a pair over in the classified rn 😂. But they are seriously cool- the variable “color” knob is a great feature. Amazing what they packed into such a tiny form factor.
