 On Tom Verlaine's passing. I knew everyone in the band a little. Fred Smith being the one I used to connect with most often. Billy Ficca, Television's drummer stepped up from CB's pool table to sit in on my band The Demons' set when our drummer was a no show, twice. You don’t get cooler than that. I remember giving Tom a ride in my 66' Impala one day. He was actually quite a funny guy. Fred Smith got me in on the audition for his solo band. The Demons had lost their contract with Mercury and I would have loved to jump right in to something good.. He said I played too much like Keith Richards, which was true at the time. Jimmy Rip got the gig. He deserved it, he was way better than me as a powerful contributor sideman. I was really a songwriter who could play fairly well. I must have seen Television a dozen times. At that time, you just went to CBGB, and almost every time, something incredible would happen. I watched the first gig of The Talking Heads, Mink DeVille, Blondie, early Ramones, The Heartbreakers (with Johnny Thunders), Suicide, Devo, The Dictators, Tom Petty, and the list goes on and on. Everyone was different, everyone original, and Television was in truth, the first of us. I’ll never forget how Television always made me think that perhaps I was limiting myself. What a gift, to inspire fellow musicians. I hope his journey into the next dimension is a brilliant one. He gave so much to so many people through his music, he deserves all that heaven will allow. |

I loved Marquee Moon. Err I mean worshipped- even though the first time I heard it was 2003 or so. But it was this song that changed my life forever. Got this CD for my commute around 2005. I feel like I can hear the reels turning. I don’t care what year or century it is

I love all three studio records.
Huge influential band.
Had no idea he was sick.
Loved his take on guitar.

Incredible memories! I guy I’ve worked with played guitar in one of Richard Lloyd’s recent touring bands. He wasn’t allowed to play anything that sounded like Tom! |

Funny, I had a minor falling out with Richard a few years back. I went to a show he was playing at. My friend Walter Lure of the Heartbreakers and The Waldos was playing, and Richard was the other act. Walter was my second guitarist in an earlier band, but I knew Richard a little from the CBGB days, and we had been trading comments a lot on facebook. He did something rude when I went to say hello, and I was pissed. I know he'd had some personal issues before, but rude is rude. It was really no big deal though, just that I wouldn't be so warm and welcoming if we crossed paths again. He knows a hell of a lot about applying music theory to guitar playing. I'm trying to figure out how he "wasn't allowed" though. Were the music police going to report him to Tom?  |

That makes sense. Fate is funny that way. Tom was like Abraham Lincoln, lanky, a bit out of place in the big city, and yet truly formidable. Richard was better looking and incredibly good on guitar, but he was quieter. Tom was the singer after all, so it figures he'd be noticed more.
