Really just curious if there were latency concerns that would be alleviated with the new chips.

I see peeps not recommending larger ssd, too expensive get nvm drive, much faster, way more storage and cheaper The pro runs 3 monitors and has 4 tb ports. I know what you are saying KCatt but the on board ITB is significantly faster than the 512 according to the internet "experts" and in the event of my heading into swap territory I want to cover that easily - yes, $300 AUD more however an NVME and quality case will cost upwards of $250 AUD so to me it's a toss up and easier just to go on board for a little extra. Cheers, Ross

I understand , while the 512 internal ssd is faster the the 256, but then we are paying a very high price to upgrade the internal memory vs the nvme option: much faster than the 512 and 4-800% more storage (1-2 TB)? But, I feel the same, more comfortable buying larger ssd but I am pricing the other option too. Its all a little abstract: as my m1 is much faster than my 2012 mbp, the m2 would faster thsn my m1 and then the m2pro would be faster again. i bought my m1 used for around 800, the m2 will be plus 30-40%, the m2pro, plus 100-120%, while performance improvements are roughly half of the cost improvements in % terms, not a strong economic argument, as i have had zero problems with my m1, but it has apple care plus so easy to sell. So, I’m still crunching the numbers ! If I can return, I might try the nvme option with my m1.

Can go to local Best Buy get samsung 1Tb nvme and usb-c enclosure for $140. A 256g nvme is $29, enclosure about $30 vs apple’s $200 or 300% more costly and slower.
But with m1 need a 1:2 usb-c or a dock , (around $2-250 all in), as the m1 has limited ports
need to go to m2 pro price range $1500 -1800 plus to get 4 tb ports, plus 256 more ssd and about 40% more cpu speed.

I'm just going to wait a couple of weeks till all the info is in and if all is good I'll simply spend and not look back - 2 years down the line I'll be glad I'm not thinking "what if" Cheers, Ross

That’s the nice thing with the mac all in decision: just one decision plus apple care plus ! An m2pro would be good.

If I were buying today I'd think looooong and hard about it, for sure.

Well, it shows you why, wiz (8g) and I (16g) are happy with our m1s.
But the base m2, due to the slower ssd would likely have problems with only 8 gig running all that software, but why would you?
If you were, The base m2 would memory swap and then you would likely have a problem with 8 gig ram.
16 g ram here is plus $250, and he recommend 1 tb ssd another $250, here in Canada, the m2, 1 tb, 16 g ram is about $1600, no tax.
M2pro same spec but 10 core, faster cpu is $1950.
A used m1, same spec would be around a $1,000, maybe.
You saw the speed of his m1, the m2 should be about 20% faster, the m2pro 20% again or not quite 50 %faster then the m1.

What if all you want to do is record and rough mix some shit and also very rarely create and edit very simple videos? Just get either “M” chipped mini with 16 gb RAM and then as big of an internal SSD as my conscience will let me buy?

Really, you wouldn’t need the 16 g.
Or even the large ssd , just use external storage.
i’m running a 256 m1 ssd: just need to manage what I store on it to keep some headroom, 20%, seems ti be a sort of threshold here.

I don't get it, the 8 core M2 is barely more powerful than a prehistoric sixth gen Intel so you're going to want the 10 core Pro. Then you'll probably want some additional RAM and a larger SSD because you can't upgrade them after the fact.
At this point price wise there's hardly any difference between the M1 Max Studio and the M2 Pro Mini. Also dependant on the benchmark there isn't a massive performance improvement in the grand scheme, it seems more like an efficiency update which to be fair I have no issues with due to the cost of electricity at the moment. However the Mac Studio has more ports, a better GPU (if that matters to you) and if nothing else it's a bit more convenient.
I'm sort of swaying towards the Mac Studio TBH..

Comes down to needs over wants and budget. You really need to know what demand you actually put on your computer? Maximum performance goes up as you spend more money. The, what $5-1,000 question is are you buying performance you will actually need/use? “ My maserati does 185, I lost my license, Now, I can’t drive ! ”

I came to that conclusion as well comparing pricing. I'm toying between a Mac Studio with 64GB RAM and 1TB SSD or wait until next year when Intel release the i9 14th gen using 7nm silicon and full bandwidth DDR5 support and allegedly 24 cores! For the same money, I can get a pro built PC workstation using a 14th gen intel with 24 cores 64GB DDR5 and 5TB of ultra fast internal Samsung nand (M.2) ssd drives. I really like and dislike OSX and Windows 11 in equal measure, so it's not the OS that informs my decisions about a studio workstation. I really think the Mac Studio form factor is great and so space saving, but I'm attracted to the muscle a PC workstation can provide. Mmmh I''m really in two minds about this - both solutions are really attractive for very different reasons.
