Hi, What are a good set of default drum mics for live sound without breaking the bank? so far, I would lean towards: Kick - Beta 91 / PGA52 for beater Snare - SM57 top / Beta 56A bottom Toms - Audix D4 OHs - I own Beesneez LuLus - need a replacement (don't want to leave mine there) --- Thinking out loud: - What about Warm WA84's, or AKG C214s, or Shure KSM137s, or Earthworks TC20 - I want a full kit picture, not just cymbal mics
- What about telefunken M82 for kick
- What about telefunken M80-SH for toms
- What about telefunken M81-SH or Shure SM7B for snare
Any thoughts?

Atm23 and Atm25 are good for live. Snare and toms.

Happen to have access to an e604 or 414 to compare the DM20 to? I’m sure plenty would love the MC-012 too.

Haha… Yes, I know, ultimate, side-by-side comparison dreams.

Well, how cramped is the stage? Personally a Beta 91A, Shure SM57 for the top and SM98 for the bottom (with the SM98 arm attachment it would only require one stand), e604/SM98/Earthworks/ImSureThereAreTons of clip on mics for the tom, and whatever for the hi-hat (something with a roll off filter like a SM81, AKG 460, countless others) and a pair of overheads (personally I’d use pencils or something with good directionally so it doesn’t just pick up a bunch a low end and bleed from the stage) and you’d have 4 mic stands which is very uncluttered and honestly looks better

I was told to give a price and I am not doing so without new mic recommendations as most live kits are crappy choices. I am dictating the booth size. Haven't crossed that bridge yet but due to live recording experience, I know it will be tall. I have been burned by short booths with OH mics forcing me to use them as cymbal mics where I prefer placement to get a great overall kit picture. The LuLus have done brilliantly none the less and though not sure of the directionality, bleed hasn't been an issue and won't be in this. I just don't want to put "my" mics to leave in the booth. I assume the earthworks or Warm WA84s will sound good. I could always spec the Beesneez for a direct replacement. They really are super balanced, almost never require EQ. Thanks for the heads up on the B98s! had forgotten about them.

I’m not a live engineer, but I’ve dabbled enough and talked to enough FOH folks to recommend Audix (they sell drum packages), with the exception of the kick mic, which I’d go for beta 52.
They have tight pickup patterns, a focused sound, and are easy to place. Also, cheap and sturdy.

Overheads: high headroom, detailed, not disgusting modern cardioid sdcs. Shure KSM 137 or Austrian Audio CC8.
Snare: Shure SM57 of course
Kick: EV RE20 for wood, Heil PR40 for punch and clarity, Shure Beta 52 for v shape.
Toms: Sennheiser e904 for big sound or EVs for natural sound, ie ND44 for rack and ND46 for floor.
And an EV RE50 for any vocalist who insists on holding the mic!
I can’t recommend for non personal use: Most Audix mics. Scooped boom click plastic modern rock/metal sound. It’s there if you want it but who wants it? Occasionally the d6 will beat everything else on kick but that’s it. The i5 is bodiless on snare most of the time. The d4 is a cool tom mic but the d2 is scooped.
Audio-technica. A tendency toward plastic sound and high repair cost to try to get you to buy a new one.
AKG. Nobody wants to deal with Samsung for repairs of anything.
Beyerdynamic. Beyerdynamics are very nice mics and detailed but they do not fix out of warranty mics. This makes their microphones disposable while the Shures keep on trucking.
Sennheiser e604 are incredibly fragile. You’ll get six months out of a three pack.
Heil PR48. The PR48 is just a PR30 EQed for you.
