I find the noise pretty low in the location recording sub-forum. Not highly populated though. I haven’t found a better place to interact with classical techniques as a person not living in that world. Tangential to the know-it-all/know-nothings in the main sections, I have similar interactions with tech people at tech forums who wish to spout from textbooks without consideration of the hands-on research and evidence I’m presenting. Always people with a ton of knowledge but zero experience with the quirky antique electronics I’ve been around the block with. I think you nailed it, there is a huge difference of living in the real world and what we are taught or read about. On this tangent I was just explaining to a guy who is TDing his first paying show “ your job discription is to make sure everything goes right, ain’t going to happen in a million years, your job is to make it so the people in the audience don’t notice anything went wrong”. It’s like getting a message from a guy who’s in a panic because the meter on his Furman is 5 volts lower than usual, umm that isn’t even 5% it could be the meter calibration and everything should be able to handle it, “ but they said in recording school a change in voltage is bad”. Half hour later oh I figured it out voltage drops when I turn on my dryer” duh. I am surprised there isn’t a forum somewhere dedicated to more minimalist remote work, but then again no offense Hudsonic and the like, I don’t see most of that type having the patience for the weekly “what’s the best interface noob”.

Some number of the pro remote people also hang out on the bootlegger forums. Which is remote work too, different constraints/permissions. The bootlegger hobbyists frequently have better and more expensive toys than the working day gig pro’s….another thing that rings true.

I was an avid and prolific poster for many years, but for the last five or so years I only haunt the new products forum, just to keep an eye on fun new gadgets. Being a rather experienced professional myself, I got tired of hearing about various things I'm wrong about from kids and weekend warriors who will probably never set foot in a real recording studio, let alone pay any bills with the work. At least when I find myself in a disagreement here, I can presume the person I'm bickering with knows what they're talking about and has actual, valid experience to back up their point (wrong as they may be 😋).
Before I began posting there, way back in its earliest days, GS was a fucking TREASURE TROVE of information. The site was mostly real working professionals from across the professional spectrum exchanging ideas. Still a lot of arguing, but man oh man can you learn a LOT from two very experienced people arguing their points. Loved it back then. Those days are long gone. The real pros on the site mostly bailed. The ones that stuck around are mostly anonymous, and posting infrequently. Or, they're the type who've transitioned away from record making and into "content creation", and posting on GS is just part of their marketing routine.

I guess I look at things from a different perspective.... There's a huge amount of experience / knowledge over there that doesn't exist here or in most places. And there is drama no matter WHERE you go. I just ignore it for the most part. Things that I'd love to see discussed more in depth or even at all here.... Post Production mixing for film Legit composing (not songwriting) from a media perspective SFX design VSTi Orchestral libraries - in depth ADR Orchestration techniques Time code options in 2022 Synth production & modular synth techniques How composers are adapting to the new landscape post 2020 vs. 2000. Voiceovers Recording live in difficult outdoor situations How to mix music for Film Video production (we have dabbled a bit here) Audio for Theme Parks Differences in production techniques between LA, NYC, Atlanta, London, Prague, Tokyo, Nashville. Etc. to name just a few. Unfortunately, these topics do not come up here. Or very rarely if they do. It's all stuff that gets discussed pretty much in depth over there. There is a HUUUUGE amount of depth and knowledge that people are hungry for that is needed and scarce availability - especially by experienced experts. And virtually never represented here. It is what it is. If I want to know about acoustic guitars, mics for guitars or vocals, the best 47 or 84 clone, DAW wars, the latest awesome plugins, etc. this is an AWESOME resource. For hanging out? AWESOME! For the above topics of audio knowledge? Not so much. I like international perspectives. There is a very wide perspective of audio in the world to be explored - and almost all of it interests me. I just can't find it all here. Gotta look elsewhere, and "there" is the place it's most condensed. And let's have more things like... Billie Eilish's latest hair style. (Otherwise I need to ask John E.) Ed Sheeran's new dog. ("Mutt Lange") Constant Tik Tok updates. You know. All the important Music Industry stuff! Chris

Or, they're the type who've transitioned away from record making and into "content creation", and posting on GS is just part of their marketing routine. Having spent as much of my official “ audio Career “ and my early retirement ( everybody should do it , just not like I did) as support personnel as an AE / producer I think one of the biggest issues on GS and with some of those when they first come here is that “ respect “ in our industry is completely based on discography. Don’t get me wrong I have tremendous respect for those who have been lucky enough to be credited on releases we all know, but I also no the cred, DRBill’s work got me as a friend when the kid was of the Disney age. I also have just as much respect for the regional guys who have not gotten lucky as some but are just as talented and knowledgeable. It’s easy to get pigeonholed in this industry, but most of those out there working in the real world take what ever gigs they can get, most can’t afford to be picky, but unfortunately those who see our world as a path to fame and fortune or a way to get laid only see the big names and think we get producer points ( worse that all those points are worth something). Here we have an interesting mix of all types who share the love of audio. All ages all experience levels, a mix of backgrounds and politics. For the most part we get along and here is I think the biggest difference between here and GS you can put us in an actual room together, egos are left at the door and we actually can have a couple of drinks together and hang. That’s the biggest thing and it translates in the postings PM’s, phone calls and texts. We actually pretty much like each other.

It’s wading through the BS that gets so boring. Yeah the more specialized forums are better, but it just feels so corporate. Maybe I just navigate more intuitively over there? I dunno. I rarely have to deal with BS. And maybe I'm just used to corporate? Not sure. For whatever reason, I just don't feel the problem. These "I hate GS" threads show up on RGO about every year or two even though I still see a lot of the gang over there. I don't get it... I do get the love for here, just not the hate for there. I don't "Hate GS", really. I just intensely dislike a lot of their people who won't listen or take advice and insist on plastering their ignorantl nonsense all over the place.
And frankly, most of the people I knew there seem to have either left or cut back their activity. Most of my tech info I get over at Terry's place.
OTOH, maybe I'm just too dumb to quit?

Patiently explaining why what's incorrect about a statement gets you labeled as a "gatekeeper" or elicits the occasional "ok boomer" remark (yeah, they're still using it and no, they haven't looked up how old actual boomers are). Eh.... I used to try and help.

Going to do another test tomorrow morning. Appatite seems off a bit but no taste problems that I've noticed. Appetite may be affected by the quart of eggnog I've been consuming each day since christmas eve...

I basically quit after GS deleted a bunch of posts warning of a shady gearbroker’s practices who had begun advertising with them.
He had burnt a bunch of people including me and taken someone who had contacted me via GS messages for around $25k and seemed to still be screwing some people over when suddenly his nefarious GS history was wiped clean.

When I got peepee slapped by the mods over there for questioning bad advertiser behavior in the threads I was told in thinly-veiled terms that paying advertisers would ALWAYS be given leniency over "free accounts". When I told the mod that GS would be complicit in fraud by knowingly taking the advertiser's side, I was told that any further replies to the mods or the advertiser would result in my permaban. Haven't logged in over there since.

]Finally, I like RGO. It's a friendly place with bags of experience, nice people and a sense of commonality. We all have our off days, like having an EQ in bypass and thinking it sounds amazing LOL.. Although nobody cares around this place, it's just easy and that makes RGO a really nice place to hang out. I'm really glad you found us! I just pop in and out of GS for business reasons, customer support and all that. There are some very toxic folks over there who spend their time reading THIS PARTICULAR subforum. Hard to work around them, but a couple of the mods are helpful. Good people here and there. WE seem to have a 99%+ good ones ratio here. It's a little less over there. But without that place, this one might not exist

Like EmRR , I think the Remote forum is the diamond in the rough -- lot's of good info in there, and I've been learning from that group since 2005. They put up with my stupid questions almost as well as RGO. Steve Remote does a terrific job tempering the mood when needed and the clown factor is low. At this point, I'm on GS only for the classifieds and Woody Guthrie's longest Metric Halo thread ever.

If you say the truth, you get brutally shot down and told it isn't true.

I jumped onboard GS a few years ago, but quickly became fried as the ratio of insult-to-information seemed to grow ever higher. I'm never a very tech-savvy type, so I don't like to chime in on forums unless it's with a specific question or with an answer from my own direct experience. That GS was so much more about personal nastiness really unsettled me. I jumped back onboard not long ago, but then got bumped out for a password issue, which I took as a sign. Still, GS is an impressive repository of info about any slice of gear one could wonder about.
I've watched GS members show up in other forums, bringing the confrontational vibe with them. I do like how, say, on the Sequential site, that kind of chatter never finds much traction. I'm quite new to the RGO forum and it certainly seems to hold a strong "info first, awkward jokes about famous artist whose music I'm not actually familiar with" position. I could be wrong!
