I'm curious how these two stack up.
I know the DMG probably doesn't do Mid/Side, but other than that does it get close in Zener mode?
Just looking for opinions on which people prefer for a Zener style compressor.

I have the Chandler on UAD and I've been using it a lot on drum parallel. It's really freaking cool. Both Joe Chiccarelli and Ryan Hewit have drum presets that are great starting points.

I'm kind of "Zener-crazy" right now. I'm putting aside a grand a month for an IGS Zen since my friend Paul mixed a song for me using a Chandler Zener...but I'm impatient and debating getting a plugin to scratch that itch in the meantime/get used to the controls. The DMG is a bunch of compressors in one, and a bargain, but I'm not sure if it will saturate correctly. And, of course the Softube is more expensive. I don't have a UAD card yet (I plan to eventually get a PCIe Octo for my system). So, I would be going native for now...but it's the same plugin just not configured for UAD. Sounds wicked on drums though. That's kind of why I want that sound....

There may be more info in the GS thread…I believe Dave builds these things from kits so he can model each component. He mentioned building a Fairchild clone which he was underwhelmed with as an additional model. The TC2 Zener is pretty smacky and heavy handed as a compressor, which is sometimes cool. I more often use it in THD mode as the color is great. Sorry I haven’t used the Softube, but you should demo Trackcomp. It’s pretty amazing, and has spoiled me for most other dynamics plugins.

I know that a Chandler Zener was used on the 2Bus for this mix of my new song: Family We Choose (Chandler Zener Mix - LINK).
Everything just sounds so elegant in that mix. I'm kind of addicted to how it came out. So now I'm trying to get in that ballpark, even if my mixes wind up being roughs for this album. Then I heard samples of the IGS Zen which really sounded close in terms of tone/stereo imaging: IGS Zen Example (LINK)I can much better justify $3K this year Vs. $5K.... But in the meantime. I figured maybe getting a plugin would help so I'd be more familiar with the controls and response. That's interesting that the guy from DMG builds his own compressors to model.

You can get if for $100 a month from Sweetwater. It's an amazing piece of kit.

I love Chandler Germanium Compressors, which are FET but have Germanium Diodes in the design too. And I'm a fan of 2254/2264 Diode Bridge Compressors. The samples sound awesome too.

If you run UA, its current 2 bundle deal - coupon, csn get you 2 expensive plug ins for $100: its zener should certainly be demoed.

The DMG can do a lot more than be a Zener, but if you already invested in the UAD architecture the Custom 3 bundle might be pretty cheap if you've got a lot of unused coupons. I finally pulled the trigger and got pretty much the last of the non-Plugin Alliance or Sonnox plugins I had any interest in and grabbed the AMS DMX and RMX16, Chandler Curve Bender and Zener, Eventide H910, and Tube Tech CL1B MK II for $250. A lot cheaper than I've ever seen them offered from Softube...

The SC filter, the mix knob, the FAST button, the modern (quiet but tone full) transformers. It's a truly high class piece.

Yeah that’s my standard dirty parallel. Limiter/HP at 300/ slow attack fast release/crank input. It’s got a diff thing than the 2500 or an 1176 just completely mangling.

The Zener on TC2 is a Chandler TG1, not built from a kit. It does saturate correctly. The reason why Dave puts the THD mode as default is because he thinks the compression action is bog standard. He thinks what's special about the TG1 is the saturation. He also thinks same about the Fairchild (which should be coming soon to TC).

So really, it's a different flavor of Zener compression. Since the TG1 is a bit of a different, more accurate to the original units from Abbey Road design. They probably share a little DNA but are good for different things. I definitely want the DMG, but I might hold off a paycheck and get it after these holiday sales are over.
