Took some recent drum mic purchases for a spin at a Christmas Carols service tonight.
Kick In - Beyerdynamic D71c Kick out - Beyerdynamic D70 mk2 Snare top - Telefunken m80-sh Snare bottom - b56a (house mic) Toms - e604s (house mics) OH - Austrian OC818s
I’ve used the 901/602 and B52/91 pairs plenty before – tonight’s setup was easily my favourite kick drum combo. Punch and attack from the d71, and a very pleasant low-end weight from the d70. I’d be happy using either alone, but the flexibility of both is excellent. They’re on the neutral side of kick mics, and can be shaped easily with EQ.
There’s not a lot of info floating around about these online, but they get a whole-hearted endorsement from me. The d71 is small enough to get into really small ported heads as well, which is very useful.
Enjoyed the m80 on snare, but definitely needed some bottom mic for the snap of the drum, it was a fairly mellow snare.
My pair of Austrian CC8s did a good job as choir mics as well, deployed on a stereo bar in XY. If there was no choir, they would have been used on bottom snare and hats.
Neither the drummer or I were massive fans of the e604s. I’ve used them for years, they sound okay, just kinda unremarkable. What do you all use on toms? I’ve been so impressed with the Beyerdynamic mics that I might look at the rest of their lineup.

I’ve always been very happy with Beyerdynamic M201s on both toms and snare. I also love M69’s on rack toms and M88’s on floor toms, as their frequency response accentuates the fundamental and attack of those drums (in typical tuning ranges).

electrets over here: sm98s or atm450s. small enough to be unobtrusive and cheap enough that i don't get too worried about errant stick hits

Agreed, m201s are great live or studio both snare and toms. m88s have gone way up in price over the past year, otherwise i'd have a bundle of them.

My favorite on toms is the Joly PE219's. Second favorite are the CAD 179/177's. It's been a long time since I've used anything else. Love the "sound" of 421's. By themselves. With no other drums playing. But - sigh - I cannot deal with their bleed and what they do to the rest of the kit. So I've sold off most of my 421's.

I'm really liking the EV-ND46 these days on toms.

Can’t get’em anymore, but Oktava MK-102 has been my preferred thing for a couple years. Was using EV RE-38’s before that. Before that, some Audix D3 and 421’s. Also grew tired of the 421 cymbal sound. Won’t go there unless there’s…..well, won’t go there anymore. Maybe if it’s solo floor tom OD.

Sennheiser e604 are fine if you gate and limit them. I like to run them hot into U-he Satin or use Oxford Limiter. Drawmer gates into almost anything that limits is fine for analog. They’re toms. The mics are just fragile as hell.
Sennheiser e904 are sturdier. The EVs are too.
e604 as house mics are almost certainly damaged. The three packs of those things only last maybe 6 months tops when owned by drummers recording a few times a week at home. In a live venue or commercial facility, you’re pissing away money vs getting sturdier mics. Even SM57s are sturdier rack tom mics.

I chose the ATM350d from Audio Technical. Good enough for Al Schmitt, good enough for me (based on the microphone section here, I love the Decades SDX). These mount directly on the drum, the clip couples with a lug nicely. That’s a few less stands to wrestle with when close mic’ing a drum kit.

At first I thought you meant 012 (which are great), but the 102 I haven't heard. Upon searching, it seems some places are still carrying them, granted I haven't tried to actually order them, but both Euro and US retailers 'appear' to have them in stock, if that helps for anyone needing to stock up at this time...

For live stuff and recording, the DPA4099 high SPL is great
e22s can be great too.

Live?
You don't need anything special for live, just something small and (hyper)cardioid. I've never used the 604, but I'd go for something like the Audix D2/D3 for toms if I needed something for live. For recording, the ATM25 cannot be beat.

My personal preference these days seams to be old EV, the N/D with the swivel heads, I see lots of Sennheiser 904’s and Shure both SM and Beta. One thing to remember especially in tight situations Hyper & Supercardiods give you those back lobes and if you don’t take care in placement cymbals can have some strange phasey bleed . One other that while I am not a big fan of but will admit are a quick set up to get the sound they have are the Audix D series.

Studio and live, there’s something about the e604 that just works for me. Reminds me of the 421 vibe without the terrible-sounding bleed. I love the e902 II and put it on the floor tom because there’s space. 414s of any type are always super cool on toms in the studio for me.

As mentioned, E904 are great, They are made of metal so can take a stick hit and have a wider freq response than the E604, which are plastic. Also I second the E902 on floor tom.
