If you have access to one of the RND VCA based compressors (543 or 5043) would be great to get your opinions in terms of a comparison. I currently own a decent collection of compressors but all other either optical, FET, or VCA --> no diode-bridge (or vari-mu) for me as of yet. Please let us know. Thanks!

I don’t unfortunately…well no stereo mu. I do have a V-comp

V-comp counts for me (well, unless you mean the Waves plug-in)! :-)

The diode-bridge circuit is used in different electrical engineering applications but who could have known that Rupert Neve was the initial inventor of using the concept for controlling audio levels (i.e. your new compressors). He just came up with it in his living room one day. Amazing guy!
kind of like Paul just coming with Get Back, pulling it from the sky:

Does anybody have an AML ez2254 to compare? That would be interesting.

I have a 5254, so why would I discourage you?

I ended up with IAA EQ's over the Neves as I saw some unhappy reviews on them and just the opposite with the IAA. However, I do now have the 542's in my "Neve" 10 space so I am not Anti Neve by any means. Rack's coming along. Attachment Deleted

Anyone care to share how the Audioscape D-Comp stacks up against the RND 5254 Diode Bridge? I currently own the D-Comp, two V-Comps and one RND MBP VCA.

Sooo. Inwish someone had stopped me lol. No - I better really good. Cleanish but good. For me, the attack and release times are lacking variability. My two units weren’t volume matched/calibrated whatever you’d call it. One was about two detents louder than the other. Annoying. And on a tiny piece it’s more annoying. My BIGGEST complaint with the units is that there isn’t a slow attack fast release option. That’s the bread and butter. I’ve had both the AS D comp and the Stam 33609 and I think I preferred both of those to a pair of these. But they can def get hairier. If cleanish thwack faster attack is your thing these do that great. And btw - could I use these and make fantastic sounding stuff? Absolutely. We’re in a game of inches and this isn’t as much my bag as some other things.

Does anybody have an AML ez2254 to compare? That would be interesting. I have compared the AML 52f50 to the 535’s. AML has extra transformers, and two separate controls for attack & release (two options for attack, many for release, fast to slow). It definitely imparts more flavor. The 535’s are sweet but if I only could have one pair and thickness and vintage smooth tones (because of that interstage x-former) were my desire, I would opt for the AML.

The lack of slow attack/fast release on the 535 is why I’ve been more interested in either the AML or the current Neve 2264alb. I have yet to personally get my hands on either of those. I do feel like the mix knob on the 535 is a good addition though to its credit.

I've found the blend knob seems to help when I feel like the 5254 isn't letting go as quickly as I might like, or if the fast button isn't doing what I want it to do. Plus you get the built in SC HPF on the stereo rack unit.
