I recently updated my computer and ProTools. I'm using whatever the latest regular ProTools is, and I'm on an M1 Mac Mini. Almost every time I load a session, it is unbelievably distorted. Just like massive digital distortion. If I close the session, and re-load it, everything is fine. I don't even have to close ProTools. Just closing the specific file and re-opening fixes everything.
I'm mainly tracking drums, and I use a few heavy plugins like the UAD Ocean Way. I've tried moving those tracks to the first spot in the session to maybe help with the loadup, but nothing really seems to help.
This really hasn't been a big deal, but I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong, or if I'm overloading my CPU, or if it is just another part of the charm of using ProTools. Thanks for any help!

I’ve been experiencing this exact same issue. Thought it was related to my buffer settings, but happens sometimes even when buffer is maxed and I don’t have heavy sessions.
I do run a UAD satellite. Interface is a Lynx Aurora (n), via TB2 adapter into the satellite. 2020 i7 iMac.
I got no answers, though.

No answers here, but the distorted session thing happens here on CPU overload pretty reliably. (I7 MBP) Maybe run Activity Monitor and look for any spikes?

I’ve had this happen and narrowed it down to a Kush plug-in. It’s the only thing that consistently will cause it to happen across sessions with different buffers etc.
Instead of closing your session change your buffer to a different number and then change it back to what you were using and it’ll go away.
For me it does anyway.

Not Pro Tools (Reaper in my case), but I had a similar thing happen that I also narrowed down to a single plugin. Its parameter values were displayed correctly whenever I re-loaded a project, but it hadn't actually re-loaded the values themselves.

Just a quick update - the buffering was indeed an issue. Switching to a different buffer fixed the issue in the open distorting session. Even switching between the initial troublesome buffer size, then to a second different size, and then back to the original buffer seemed to be just fine. So, for whatever reason, the sessions load up distorted, and at least on my Mac, basically any subsequent buffer move fixes the problem.
Thanks to everyone that chimed in!

You’re not done yet though!! You’ve found a work around for the problem but not the actual problem. Do a “save as” for your session and start removing plugins one by one and closing/opening the session to find the offensive jerk that doesn’t get along with your sessions.

Still haven't found the offending plugin, but in my case, it seems like just swapping the buffer and saving and moving forward fixed the issue in the few test files I've tried.
