if you've all the peripherals already then the base model studio is a pretty good deal and not likely to be slow for most of us - 32 gigs ram, M1 max chip, 512 Gig SSD and great connectivity. I moved from a 2020 Mini to the base Studio and it's more than enough, IMHO. Horsepower for days.

I’m going to admit something that is going to sound very non audio geek of me: since my i7 MBP died a few months ago I love the form factor of my Mac BooK Air and can’t wait to see an Air with high performance Apple Silicon. OK take away my Audio geek card, but really it’s almost like carrying an OSX tablet with a keyboard.

"$5,000 of overkill versus $25,000 of overkill."
This thing is totally aimed at the pro audio world!

Hey Cowboy, good to see you! I think the Studio is the best deal. If your current M1 can be used a while longer though, I think Apple will have an M2 chip soon. Yeah, Martin it would be a luxury at this point. I still get by ok but I max out my old box often. There are workarounds but I'd like to be able to just throw on anything and go. I believe I'll wait though like you say. Thanks.

Ok, a few maybe dumb questions. If I went for this, what else do I need? I assume a monitor of some sort. Could I use my old, almost dead but boy quite, iMac for that? What about backup/storage. My current one is, uh, FireWire. Maybe time to retire that one. Cheers, Geoff

With a mini/studio you need: - monitor - mouse -keyboard - external drive
Yes FW won’t work.
You should have: hdmi, tb3/usb-c , usb, ethernet, blue tooth, wi-fi
The studio should have more i/o than the mini

Thanks!
This may be overkill for my needs. Still leaning iMac.
Cheers, Geoff

I wouldn't try to use the old iMac as a display (too much of a headache), but you should easily be able to find a 27" Thunderbolt Display for not very much money. That's what I use with my M1 Mini and as a bonus the display has a bunch of extra ports so I don't need to use anything else as a hub or docking station for relatively limited amount of ports in the Mini.

I use the same. I swear I’ve seen them for like $200
