Does anyone have recommendations for a floor unit to move just a little air around a medium size room (call it 20'x30')? I was getting ready to hit a random button at Amazon and get one of those towers in the $80-$100 range but then realized it might be a good idea to ask here first. I would turn it off when recording, but it would be nice to be able to have it on while mixing. Optimally, I don't want to hear the thing at all.

I would turn it off when recording, but it would be nice to be able to have it on while mixing. Optimally, I don't want to hear the thing at all. Generally, the sound from fans comes from the speed of the blades churning the air or the velocity of the air causing some noise. Very little sound comes from the motor. Sometimes in cheap fans the chassis can vibrate and cause noise. Most folks who buy fans want the volume of air moved to be as high as possible so most fan manufacturers will design the fans to really "grab" the air, but this cavitates and makes a lot of noise. Sometimes you can see the blades (traditional fan) or not (something like a Dyson fan where the blades are inside the unit) but either case, the noise is present but obviously different in tone. Most of the "room" sized fans that are towers will have multiple smaller fans or a larger cage type fan, but in either case, they'll typically turn very fast to keep the air volume up. The only real solution is a much larger fan that's turning more slowly, perhaps a more expensive box fan of some type only turned to "low" speed? Hard to say really since there's a lot of variables at play and almost none of the manufacturers have honest noise specs.

Is it a fool's errand to search for a rack-mounted fan?
I have a couple of 13" deep 6U SKB racks that *might* be able to accommodate a fan on rear rails depending on the depth of equipment mounted and access needed.
I'm concerned about finding something that is both audibly quiet but also doesn't generate significant EMI with the fan motors so close.
Thoughts?

In my last place, I hired 8 women with these: a.co/d/celvzLkAs long as they were slow and deliberate, the noise was kept to a minimum. Probably the best solution.

This is definitely doable if you live in a third world country. Also, this is one of the few places where you can replace gear with humans. Compressors, gates, and automation can also be swapped with humans if recall is not necessary.

Quiet fan and SKB racks are a contradiction, mostly because of sympathetic vibrations, those plastic shells just amplify everything. The first rule of system installers is research how every thing in your rack is designed to vent before you put a fan in the rack, and 9 times out of 10 vent panels will do more good. One advantage of SKB is the rails work great with 1/3 and 1/2 space panels. All that said, in the Amp racks Im noticing that the Sound web DSP units mounted above the amps that blow out the sides are seeing some heat build up above the 3 amps that blow out the back so yeah Im looking at a 1 sp panel with to little fans to draw out the heat.

Structure born noise may likely be helped by some sorbothane shoulder washers and screws, but well beyond my pay grade to know the right calculations especially given the weight of gear is not evenly distributed on the rack ears.
At home in a Sterling desk almost everything has vents at least on one side, sometimes both. The fan would be for a mobile setup of Seventh Circle Audio pres x16 + Aurora n. I'm somewhat resigned that I'll likely only have the Aurora inside the SKB for transport. Am hopeful there's a small 'whisper quiet' blade fan as an alternative to a rack mounted option, albeit less convenient in terms of mobility. but i'm months away before experimenting with this. If you discover anything in the interim, I'm all ears.

I was expecting something far different from you . . . something that would earn you an infraction. I was rooting for you!! Back on topic, doesn't Dyson make silent fans?

Try and remember what this cheap one was please and let us know!
