What are you all using for a mouse ? - i've had several "magic" mice over the years and they've all had connection issues and it's time to say f**k it I reckon. Cheers, Ross

Hah! The "magic" is in the money they extract from your wallet.
I second (third and fourth) the Kensington Trackballs.

Coming into recording first from graphics: Photoshop. I still prefer my Wacom Intuos Pro - digital pen & pad - for use with my DAW (Logic) - much more than the mouse my iMac came with.

I used a Logitech wireless mouse for quite a number of years (and still have a couple on the shelf). It's a conventional 2-button mouse with a scroll wheel (which can actually act as a 3rd button). Battery life was excellent--many many months. It was way better than any mouse Apple ever made, magic or not. But for the last year I've been using the most recent Magic Trackpad and I like it quite a lot. The first generation of Magic Trackpad required a lot of force for a click and it irritated my tendonitis. But this one is much smoother and it works very well. Charge time isn't great--perhaps a month--so you have to keep a USB->Lightning cable nearby. But that's the only problem I've experienced with it.
It's one of those things about input devices. We're all build differently and our joints and tendons respond to wear-and-tear in their own way. Lots of people love trackballs and they're agony for me. All the suggestions you'll get are offered in good faith, so you'll just have to find out what works with your own body

I have used track pads for more than a decade. Using a mouse feels weird now.

I'll never go back to a mouse. PS - I'm sad that I'm old enough to know who your avatar is. . Parents used to watch him every Sat nite and make me suffer thru it. Some killer amazing old school musicians on that show though.

I moved from magic mouse to track pad a few years ago. I do graphic design and video at work and at home, all that plus audio, of course. I can be very precise with it and then cover large movements pretty well. I do photoshop and mouse automation in the DAW with no trouble.

I bought a mini trackball so it can sit on the console armrest. I'm pretty happy with it.

For everyday use, I have an external Mac trackpad. If I do a lot of editing, I like using a Wacom Pad – endless clicking and minature moves are easier to with a pen, I think. In part because of the precision and 1-1 tracking, but also because it feels better for the shoulder and arm to have the hand resting, in a sideways position, and the only tense muscles while clicking-and-moving-about being the index finger ones.

I like having my trackball sitting alongside a small (Artist Mix) control surface so that I can be writing automation with my L hand and editing with my R simultaneously. Writing fader automation with my L hand feels very natural. Operating a trackball with my L hand feels very unnatural for me. I'm equally adapt at writing automation with my R hand on the trackball as well. I'll just grab whatever seems convenient and feel right at the time. I've never tried a trackpad....

Kensington orbit trackball. The scroll ring has made worlds of difference in speed for me.

I watched it along with Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom and The Magical World of Disney
I still catch the Lawrence Welk reruns occasionally.

Logitech MX Master 3 is the best mouse I have ever used. It's very pretty, responsive, feels great in hand, battery works a few months. You can easily switch between 3 different devices with a button on the rear. It has an infinity scroll wheel, which I use always. It also has an additional horizontal scroll wheel on a side, but it's a gimmick to be honest. Might work for you. It also has forward/back buttons and I use them to navigate between pages in Chrome. It's great. Oh, it works on any surface.

Why is the trackball superior for those of you who like them? Is it a matter of using little real space on the desk? Or do they have higher precision?
I haven't used one in 10 years. I just remember it was really easy to reach a screen corner by flicking the ball.

I just remember it was really easy to reach a screen corner by flicking the ball. Keeps hand anchored. Less real estate needed for "mousing" around. Can work on an uneven console surface. Minimal movement for maximum benefit. Less wasted time. More comfortable. All kinds of reasons...

Awesome. Are y'all using mostly the ball-in-the-center style or the ball in the thumb ones?

Awesome. Are y'all using mostly the ball-in-the-center style or the ball in the thumb ones? Big centered one. I use this one: a.co/d/7OxGKl9I love the scroll ring. Using keyboard modifiers I can scroll or zoom X/Y so much faster than mousing around and/or using a mouse wheel. I think Bill has the right opinions on trackballs. Hand stays still and less overall movement and faster to get to edges of the screen are big ones for me.

Just another direction here: I use the Microsoft Basic mouse. It's shaped to fit your hand, but it's "universally" shaped, so that it fits either R or L hands equally well. I'm a righty, so I can't speak for how well it works for my lefty brethren, but that's the theory. LED/optical. Scroll wheel. USB wired. Super durable; I have one on each computer and some are well over 10 yrs old and no issues. Best part: they're about $12.

I replaced that with the Logitech (no wires) and now the Magic Trackpad. But to me that mouse was the best thing Microsoft ever made.

Awesome. Are y'all using mostly the ball-in-the-center style or the ball in the thumb ones? I'm a ball-in-thumb boy -- will never, ever, ever look back! Logitech m570. but will move to the latest encarnation in the next week, as they are a bit finicky.
After one day, you will adjust.
