Anyone here has seen/used a Looptrotter Modular Mixer? They look pretty fantastic.

I've demo'd the Monster Compressor and was quite taken with its sound. The console looks interesting but using 500 series modules is going to add to the total cost quickly. That said, having entire sets of different modules for EQ / dynamics handy would be really cool - you could be mixing on an API in the morning and a Neve in the afternoon. Budget permitting, of course.

And a donut with no holes? Is a danish.

Anyone here has seen/used a Looptrotter Modular Mixer? They look pretty fantastic. Jim and I checked it out at AES a few years ago when we first started looking for a board. It seems to have a nice feature set, but very expensive for what you’re getting, IMO. I’d either go for an API or see what Iron Age could do for a frame.

At around 1k per channel the FIX console is in the same ballpark I believe and there's more routing as well as filters and a tilt eq on it. So what kind of modules would you fill this thing out with? I've been thinking about going this route and filling it with a bunch of capi pres and some combo of eqs. Or do you put dynamics + eqs and leave the pres off to the side. So many options.

At this point I would grab that LiLo that's on the 'verb. Would have done that myself but we've got to finish this record first before I'm back to building furniture for something like that.

The consoles seem based on the original Ocean Ark like I have in terms of layout. Mine was based more on a line input Trident before we recapped it x10 and put Burr Browns etc in instead of the noisy TL072’s. It’s a great layout with 40 500 modules and if the Ark never existed I’d have got a Looptrotter. Sylvia Massey has one I believe to go with her lovely 5088. The Yellow and black on the rack gear is an eyesore to some. I preferred it to the API as I wanted slots not mic pre’s. Mine has a mixture of tape simulators, compressors, SSL eq, Harrison GR 32’s, Chandler lil Devil, API and a 16 channel 10XX built in sidecar. It’s pretty flexible. I have 90 + 500 modules. I could have bought a real desk ha ha.

Yeah, I keep thinking that between AML, CAPI and LinkAudio, an intrepid DIY-er with a lot of spare time could turn the Looptrotter into a modern Neve, API or SSL depending on preferences. Were it me I'd go the Link route because I'm just used to digging hard on the SSL EQ and dynamics. But building up 32 500 units is making my vision blurry and my hands cramp. That's a lot of soldering.

If I understand correctly, all of the routing and everything works just fine, even if no 500 modules are inserted at all. That's a nice feature and really lets you fill up your slots as you have the money. I wonder what kind of summing section this console has and what the headroom is like. All of that said, does the Looptrotter have automation as an option? I haven't seen that it does. Without that, it'd make me have to think twice. Hardware inserts is such an attractive option these days, that I'd alternatively want automation if I was going to buy a new console these days. Also, automation, I imagine, would add considerably to the price of the 16 ch Looptrotter.

For automation I use the Wes Leveler it’s fantastic with built in THD to switch in or out. Works like a plug.

They need to interview Radoslaw Wesolowski of Wes Audio in Tape Op. He seems to be very innovative and ahead of the curve.

I actually contacted LT about this board and tried one, out of the lot it seemed extremely flexible and as I'm a big fan of RND's EQ's so I did consider it in depth for a while. Nice sounding board, well thought out and it allows you to evolve as the money flows.
It does err on the side of expensive, however if I were to buy a desk I would probably go for the LT seen as I've already invested in a lot of 500 series modules.
