Hoooo-eey!
I've run through about three or four recent mixes since plopping this Audioscape D-Comp on top of my rack (no time for rejiggering / going offline right now) and I am really plussed. I admit it, I am a compression nerd and have more channels of analog outboard comps than I need. The only other zener one I have is the Heritage Successor (which I do think is quite good), but my ears have always loved that diode bridge thing, particularly on drums.
And with all the respect due the Heritage piece, this is pure class. All the features you need right where you need 'em, and none where you don't slowing you up.
I use a ton of subgroups. Partially out of convenience, partially out of laziness. So when it's getting to the right end of my mix window, there's funnels going into funnels. Every single thing I've tried the D-Comp on is better for it. Drum room mics? Uh-huh, ayup. Overheads? With authori-tah. Drum submix? Yes, indeedy.
But the fun doesn't seem to end there. I've tried it in parallel setups against the main mix and there's definitely something to it. Really seems to like anything with a lot of toms in it. Oh, and an unruly SVT head/cabinet with an RE20 became a fire-spitting monster.
I think the inspiration for this was one part EMI TG compressor, and one part watching Godzilla destroy a Japanese city.
Now... I have to actually rack it.

Just ignore the metering, because it's meaningless. Haha. Definitely EMI TG-inspired, but a bit more in the Zener vibe than the TG-1 vibe to my ears (I prefer the latter, fwiw, but the D Comp is a different enough sound that it sorta ends up apples v pears)

Actually that's what I'm liking the most about this honeybooboo is that it's not "just like" something else. Completely its own animal. I know people like diode comps for the break-the-speed-limit attack times, but I like letting the needles swim below the surface with a longer attack. It doesn't 'pump' so much as it does 'heave'.
Much as I get drunk with giddy abandon slamming the thing, I try to remember to compress responsibly. But it really does bark like a dog when you pin it - in a good way, if that was unclear.

“Heave” is a perfect description. I’m stealing that.

Don't forget its 'warm punchy mojo'.
Between us girls, it does have that, though.
