IngEng's sta-level story made me think of this. Have you had any "my husband bought this telyfunkin microphone years ago and it's been in the attic, take it or I'm giving it away" stories?

I've always had a dream where I would find a complete set of Gibson "Modernistic" guitars (Futura/Flying V/Explorer/Moderne) at a garage sale:
"My husband worked at Gibson and collected these funny-looking guitars, the ones they couldn't give away back then. I could never figure out what he saw in them; I think they're ugly. Just take them".

They didn`t know what they were. I`d love to stumble onto one of those grange sales...

This is definitely my lucky story. Saw a baby grand piano come up on CL for $300. Natural finish, 1932 Cable Nelson. I was so determined to get it, I offered the guy $500 like a dumbass. Still feel like I got a good deal though. No way we could have even bought a nice couch for that price. Not in the greatest shape, but it's probably the beat deal I've ever gotten off CL.

I've scored on a bunch of deals. Found a pair of McIntosh MC50 amps and a 60's Ampeg Reverberocket in the trash. Got a Fender Modern Player Jazz bass brand new for $50. Got my '79 Mesa Mark II for $320 shipped, it just needed a tube socket replaced (buddie took care of it for a couple nice bottles of beer). Scored a 5 string fretless Alembic bass for $1000 then sold it probably 10 years later for $1800. Got a Warwick Fortress Flashback bass for $1200 that I sold probably 10 years later for $2500.

A couple of years ago a friend in LA was walking downtown when he passed a trash dumpster. He noticed something shiney on top. Yes, it was a pair of UREI LA-3A's. They had a sticker on them, Los Angeles City. He brought them down and now he has a nice pair of fixed up LA-3's.

I dunno. Got my pair of KM184 for 200$ on Ebay. Got a pair of Earthworks mics on Ebay for 200$ and sold them for 600$ on Ebay a couple weeks later.
I was buying westinghouse 24" monitors on Ebay because they had a real bad habit of the connection between the driver board and LCD panel coming loose. I'd buy them "broken" for 50$, plug the cables back in and tape them in place and resell them for 200$.
I got my 68 bassman on ebay for 200$ as well.
I find things for fairly cheap, but I wouldn't call anything a lucky find. It seems that the days of finding great deals has been killed by the internet.

Got an ADR Compex 760 for $100 off CL once when I was in Nashville visiting an old friend. Effectively made money on that trip.

One day I walked by my neighbor and saw the trailer behind his car filled with junk and...a Fender Rhodes. A minute later would have been too late.

I snatched up a wurlitzer 200a from the local dump when I was about 11 (Good taste for a little guy, eh?). It would give you a little shock every once in a while and one day I came home from school and my dad had taken it right back to the dump. He learned his lesson though, because now I get a call every time they pass by something thrown to the curb that they think is remotely desirable. Maybe one day they'll snag a B3 instead of all those Conns and Baldwins they have sitting in their garage now.

A buddy of mine bought a MINT B3 with Leslie for $300 off CL in LA... A couple had purchased it new and it sat, basically untouched and unplayed in their front room for decades! Nice! My wife found a C3 with the PR40 tone cabinet at an antique mall. Owners had no clue what they had, was the first guy in line the next day and after an offer of $600 was loading it in the truck. Much the same deal, single owner barely played. Still had the original can of tone wheel oil! sometimes you just get lucky.

Fender Telecaster Bass for $100 in a pawn shop in 1985. Not sure what it's worth today, but it's in the thousands. That was before the internet and I didn't even know what I was buying. I was a kid lookin for a cheap bass.

I won't buy vintage gear unless I can snag it for a song. I have been really lucky to score almost all of my Ampex gear for way under value. I bought my Telefunken V-72's from Omni studios here for $1450 for the pair. That was one of my favorite days ever. He has 4 pairs and I had no more money at the time. I have often wondered where they all went.

You guys are gonna hate this. Now that you have been warned, my business partner found a 51 nocaster in the pawn shop next door to his dad's music store for $125 20ish years ago."Uh dad, they have this tele next door that just says Fender on the headstock. What's that all about?" The fretboard had been replaced with an ebony one and a humbucker had been put in the bridge but damn, it still rules! I will put up pics next time it's at the studio.
