Anyone want to go in with me on a group buy on the NightPro Eq?? I'm looking at buying the PCBs and either have some panels and cases made or maybe someone already has those, but the PCB's are much cheaper with just 10 of us.
It's the poor mans GML.... lots of guys use these and I'm getting sick of trying to find a Sontech, it's not possible, and the Nite Eq is pretty darn good itself, sort of a stepping stone, and can always be used for another buss if you did find a Sontech build.
Let me know... I'd want someone to verify the PCB specs before we went in, but the designer sent me all the files.
Peace!

What's this based on? Is it the EQ3D? EQ3? Do you know approximate cost all in?

EQ3D...... I havn't made it as far as a total cost..... but just looking at the BOM it can't be that much, there's just not a lot of parts in it. It's also 1U, and there is already a face plate and rack design out there, it'd just be getting 10 guys to want to build it for them to make another run.

Here's the page with all the info twin-x.com/groupdiy/displayimage.php?album=485&pos=4I would think dandeurloo could probably do it.... I know there is one out there somewhere. I mean I looked over everything and this should be a pretty inexpensive build. Check the BOM.... there's not many parts at all, and there are no exotics either.... just a simple clean stereo EQ.

I can do cases. It only makes sense if we start with 10. Otherwise silkscreen and layout gets to be to expensive if it's less then that.

It would probably be 150 USD unless I do some crazy multi color silk screen job on them. Let me know how I can help!

Hey guys.... is anyone interested in going in on this eq.... I've watched about 6 different interviews with engineers, big ones, and pretty much all in a row they've mentioned this eq on their stereo buss. There's gotta be 10 guys out there that will commit to this and let's get it rolling. Even if you've got your favorite buss eq, this is still the Maag eq4 in rack from, but in two channels. If you've priced those out you can see the massive cost saving here.
What I'll do, is taking the info from Dan, I will put all this together, get the cost, build the BOM and basically make it a full on kit, but before I go through all that I at least want to get the 10 commits.

Getting there.... trying to get a firm price on the PCB's, and who's going to make them. I'd like Gustav to make it a permanent project, something he keeps on his site because I believe the designer "Peter" would be totally fine with it since he gave me all the docs for the EQ. If that's the case it would save a lot. I've got a thread on GDIY to see if I can get some folks on board over there too.
EDIT: Ok, so the designer sent me a message about 20 seconds after I posted this message. He wants to be the guy making the boards, so I was mistaken by the email we had a couple weeks back. He wants to make a minimum of 60 PCBs, so it'll have to get a lot of support on the GDIY before we can really proceed. I'm still going to get the pricing together though, as soon as he let's me know the price per PCB I can put it together.

Regarding Tat Purusha's Sontec Kit you mentioned in the other thread, is it already out-of-stock? You know, I'm not positive on that. I kind of got fixated on the Nite eq because of it's air band, but in all in all I'm really looking for a great stereo buss eq like the Sontech or GML for my mixbuss. I want to buy either a kit, or find something inexpensive I can modify to compete. If you've got any ideas lay them on me. Are you interested in doing Purusha's Sontech?

Well, not really, still having a pair of igor's PCBs waiting in the drawer i still not got around building (which i will not part with, of course...). But - Igor and Purusha did business together in the past, could be, it is nearly the same thing. If so, it is a fairly easy build. At least, the Sontec will not be unobtanium anymore. Will update the sontec thread soon...looking out for more info right now...
Yep, the NiteEQ is famous especially for the air band...might be a really good eq for busses, but also not toooo special......but surely a cheaper build than the sontec.

Yeah, I think the NiteEq would be a much easier and cheaper build. This would be a good beginner build I would think.

That's really why I'm trying to get it going..... It's just so simple, but it offers some really valuable characteristics. Looking at the PCBs obviously there are very little parts, and it's not stepped but just normal alpha pots. I don't see it being anymore than $500 to build the whole thing, which is crazy considering what the Maag Eq4 goes for. But, now in order to make it happen 60 boards have to be ordered and I don't have that kind of cash to invest, but I do believe if someone did, and could pay the guy for the PCB's, you would be able to bundle this into a kit and get your money back within a year. I'm sure the cases would be even less expensive for over 30 right dandeurloo?

Well the EQ4's are 500 series, and this design was what they were modeled on I don't see where they would be able to say anything. And I'm sure Maag's version is a variant. The project was full blow a few years back, even when the EQ4 was full blown, nothing was said then. I'd really like something rack mount that I can just hardwire into my buss, 500 stuff is really not completely meant for that. Even the VP28's I'm considering buying something like the A Designs 500hr so they are separated from all the other gear in my rack to cut down on interference and heat.

I guess I just thought the Niteq was between the Nightpro EQ3D and the MAAG when Cliff wansn't in the game. I'm just not really hip to what type of stuff is kosher, ya know.
If I get some time to open up my EQ2, I'll snap some pics for you to take a look. Also, FYI, there is a 4 channel PreQ3 on eBay right now that you might want to check out. I've got one and think it's the balls. Can use it in line mode to stick the air band anywhere you want too.

As for the legality of the DIY NiteEQ... If my memory serves me right, at the time peterc brought up the DIY version, the NTI original was EOL and there was no re-issue available. At that time, there was an unwritten law in the GDIY community to not clone any device that is still an active design that is commercially available. Later on, alot of the devices, that have been cloned by the DIY community, have been re-issued. I guess this is because the demand has been noticed. Sometimes i think, many pieces of gear would not be commercially available again, if the DIY community had not shown up, that there still is a market for them...
Best regards, Martin
