I though I had a thread about this earlier, can't seem to find it now, apologies.
I did some work before the last album on demoing channel strips. Felt the Empirical Labs Arouser and Big FeEQ were it but my machine couldn't handle the load. Got a new M1Max but was rushed on the project and just stuck with the PA AMEK9099.
Having free time again and preparing for another live recording, I showed up for a spanish rock set an captured about 4mins as a multitrack test. Went flawlessly.
Back home today, I decided to do another test and tried the EL plugs against the PA AMEK, Waves V2, PA4000. To me, they all sound flat except for the EL plugs and the Waves EV2. The AMEK has a little low end fullness, as does the Waves, now.
The EL just sounds rich, with a forward sound and extra space. I had heard the richness before but with the LYDs, the forwardness and space jump out at me. I have never had a plugin do what I am going to look to hardware to do - provide immediacy. all that to say I am done shopping. the EL plugs may not be intended to be a channel strip but they rock together. It would be cool to see a console with distressors on every channel considering the variety it can deliver.
You should check them out. The Waves EV2 would be 2nd for me. It does some of what the EL plugs do, just not as clearly.

i do own a bunch of channel strip plugs, but i literally never use them except for some low latency work while tracking - PA SSL G usually. The only channel strip I find useful, really, is the Scheps omni channel and that's just because it's closer to the kinda stuff i like. I literally hate the comps on every channel strip i've got otherwise. and I'll take the fab filter pro-q all day long over any of the eqs, except maybe the UAD 1073 in a lonely few certain situations.
in fact the things i find them most useful for is gritting up/over driving, but i still have other more preferable options for almost every scenario.
keep hoping to get one i really like, but i feel like they all slow me down

I never really got into channel strips, preferred having a few plugs on each channel for each task. Then I got the Fuse VCS-1 (mostly because I just like and trust that company's plugs) and started to mix with that on each channel, adding whatever other EQ/comp/etc whenever needed.
I suddenly found that mixing sped up a bit and I was really happy with the results. It felt a bit closer to working on a console with outboard, so much of it is likely how it leans towards a workflow I grew up with. I trust the strip with the basics and then add other plugs here and there for their character.
Can't compare with other strips - I do think this one sounds great in a simple and utilitarian way - but I'm totally sold on the workflow I get with a channels strip.

I’ve always loved the idea of using a single channel strip on every track, but my impulsiveness always gets the best of me and I end up using 5 or 10 or 15 plugins to get what I want.
I think the main issue is that I want to be able to just grab physical faders and knobs and get to work, but the second I open my plugin list, I immediately want to try something else.
Maybe I need to try Console 1 sometime.

Haven't really tried the El plugins except the UAD Distressor which I suppose is different from Arouser. I didn't explore many new plugins for years as I was happy with what I was using. I was mostly mixing through an API console. When I started doing more in the box I needed more options. I had been Waves Ren EQ and Comp which still work very well. I did explore channel strips and ended up liking the CLA Mixhub. It has been my go too. It is very easy to use and has most everything but a de-esser. The EQ and compressor are great.

they all suck tbh. At least the psp infinistrip has a lot of color and the mcdsp channel g is pretty and the other mcdsp one is weird.
You’re better off just getting something like slick eq ge and Molot ge or the sound radix bundle or the ancient Oxford eq and Dynamics or waves Renaissance bundle or the two EL plugs like op bought. Just something with a lot of eq shapes and a flexible compressor

As far as channel strips go, after 20 years I still think Metric Halo ChannelStrip is the best (and has been). I am mostly OTB however.

My go to ITB channel strip is the UA 88RS - I find it incredibly useful (I also love the 88 LFC too)
The EQ sounds very musical and has an elegant softness to it, I also find the compressor very useful for gentle stuff and all round it's a great plugin.
I'd like to buy the hardware channel strip version - the Neve 8801 - that's a lovely thing :-)
