I was watching a you tube video on a review and there was a noticeable volume difference between the left and right channel, not sure how many dB. But it was noticeable. I’m sure it’s a cheaper manufacturing process to sell for so cheap

OK, I have a 500 rack with Violet EQ -> XPressor 500 -> Iron Age Audio EQs. I'm going to use the Violet correctively before compression and will sweeten with the IAA. Replacing the PA AMEK 250 EQ and backing off the PA SHMC to less than a db on the optical and making the chain -> hardware -> SHMC... the difference is staggering. There is immediacy and clarity - better than I have heard in my productions and less zing. I am bumping 1 notch of 8K on the SSL, pulling back 1 notch of 300 and 1 notch of 3K and a HP of 30, then compression and then on the IAA's, 1 click of top, 1 click of 1K and 2 clicks on the bottom. Pretty fun.
So specifically on the SSL. The top seems very linear, not euphoric like the IAA. The lows are thin at first and then puffy - no love there. The parametric mids, 2 bands, are very cool. The HP filter seems good on 30. So, very useable but don't expect warmth on the bottom - seems very SSL - lol. The IAA sounds big and punchy and the top is more gentle/silky. Again, all together, not a bad chain.

Ordered one. Demos sound good and it's too good a price not to try.

Extremely precise which in an analog world is a rarity, I use them to control my outboard Lexicon / Eventide verbs and they do an absolutely great job of it.

Being discussed in another thread (hardware / black friday sales).
I slotted mine up yesterday and - surprise - it sounds a lot like a modern SSL EQ! Which, depending on your familiarity with their desks/outboard - is either great (works as expected) or unimpressive (bb..bb..b.b..but where's my analog mojo?!?!?). Sounds a lot like the X-Rack and 9000J EQ to my ears, $500 for a stereo unit is an absolute steal.

So, this EQ is clean and precise? How does it differ from a higher quality ITB EQ?

With the plugin emulations, I expected a bit of warmth and punchiness. I guess the EQ is not where mojo is for SSL.

So, this EQ is clean and precise? How does it differ from a higher quality ITB EQ? Well, I guess it doesn't really.. I'd probably search for other options if you want a Mojo HW insert via a DAW but the Violet solves a few issues in a mixer setup, mainly EQ for FX returns or as a cheap alternative to something like an API 5500 for master / bus inserts.

I was admittedly in the latter camp. With the plugin emulations, I expected a bit of warmth and punchiness. I guess the EQ is not where mojo is for SSL. Yeah, this is somewhat SSL's fault actually. Their current marketing has a slightly revisionist take on their 'legacy'. Newer users, who mostly know of them from Instagram photos (where a 9000-J is an ad hoc laptop stand and monitor controller) equate 'legacy' with 'vintage'... and 'vintage' with "punchy, warm, thick, analog-gy goodness". That's never been 'the SSL thing'. When they put that '4k mode' button on a $200 USB2 interface's preamps and literally said "for the mojo of our classic consoles", that was peak cringe. Nay, what Solid State Logic are known for are... if I had to put it all in a word... being "precise". Their most famous design these days, the Quad Bus Compressor from the E-series desks, is something of an outlier. They were TRYING to create something transparent, but the options for VCA's back then weren't there yet.

Got the UV EQ. It sounds good and will see a lot of use here. I’ve always had a thing for SSL mids. They’re kind of assertive sounding or something. This is definitely clean, but it has a certain familiar character to it in the mid bands.
