Are there any converters on the market that work with non proprietary ethernet. Something I can hook direct to a windows based laptop for example.

You can use Dante Virtual sound card on windows but it’s more latent and uses more cpu power than usb.
Mac you can use AVB compatible interfaces like Motu, Metric Halo, and the Avid Carbon over an Ethernet dongle but it’s more latent and uses more cpu than usb and you need a usb dongle anyway…
Why not just get a usb interface with decent drivers? The OEM usb drivers are pretty good nowadays and RME is still fast if you can find them and like the RME sound. The Steinberg stuff is cheap and I also like the new USB Apogee interfaces. The Symphony Desktop and Duet 3.

The fastest solutions don’t work as well with stock Ethernet cards. Their are a bunch of faster SR install solutions Yamaha AD8HR + Avitran card to replace second AES port about $500 used for example) but the Ethersound software likes to operate with nothing else running and not sure even if it did getting it to work with a DAW wouldn’t be fun. There are at least 4 standards with some exceptance ( Dante, CobrasSound Ethersound Rocknet) plus AVB so read manuals before jumping in.

Dante via Rednet is selling for half price in oz at the moment. Insane deal but after reading the manuals realised it’s more intended for pcie.
Been looking to upgrade my converters for a while. Thought Dante might be a good option with the low latency it offers. Looked into Moto and as mentioned only does Ethernet with apple.
Probably end up with clarett + and usb.

This is one of the most common Dante complaints, I’m on a laptop and I can only do 32 slow ch without a PCIE chassis and card? If you use a digital console with a Dante card and stage box, if the laptop is strictly for monitoring, not bad.

A real shame. Thought Rednet was going to be a foot in the door.

Ravenna Net is another one, but is NOT cheap hardware wise.

Metric Halo 3D systems connect and synchronize with each other and a Mac over ethernet. The same ethernet that's carrying TCP/IP throughout your LAN. Hubs, switches...they connect through all that.
So, for example, I can disconnect my mac from my studio room and take it to my living room, plug it into the ethernet/LAN drop in that room, and remote control my MH boxes from there. Or, I could keep my Mac in the studio room and move the MH boxes anywhere in my house to record.
Is that what you are looking for?

yep that's it. seems like so many options. also allows me to run cat6 monitor feeds and incorporate additional processors all at low latency with a central control point. windows based.
or i could have a cab setup in another room with a 2-channel remote a/d and run the feed via lan without needing to run mic cables everywhere.

thx, not heard of ravenna before. generally its Windows stuff. But it's by Mergining Technologies so big bucks for their hard ware. There are a few others that run it too but not many and still pricey. Dante is going to be the flexible all around. I doubt in most situations you'll notice any issues with a built in LAN port. Some PCs have built in 2.5Gbps anyways. I am using built in LAN ports on my PC to talk to my HAPI via Ravenna. No issues. For super low latency though you'll need something else likely. I run a Masscore system at the studio which runs a PCI lan card, but it's not "special" and has no built in DSP or anything. Its just a 120 buck or so intel LAN pci card.
