My hunch, it’s not a 4K or 9K, most thought the price was high for what it is and made in China vs UK. You miss judge the market best to cut your loses. Best for SSL new owners to understand what people expect from the SSL name.

If Mackie did a 500 series VLZ Mixer channel strip would anyone buy it?
It was one channel of a prosumer desk ported to 500 series as if people were so desperate to own a channel of an affordable small format project studio mixer they'd be happy with a single channel only - it never made any sense to me as a product.
I get the Neve 88LB 500 series or 8801 that's one channel (or pre only) of a $250,000 mixer!!

I have no idea about the sound, the build, quality of components, etc., but I would have assumed that the brand name and feature set would be enough to get these out the door at $500. Guess I was wrong : )

Guess I was wrong : ) The feature set is great for the $ and the Sonics are reportedly pretty good. The thing is when a manufacturer like SSL brings out a lower price product, they have to understand that it may grow volume, but at its main dealers product moved because gearpimps pushed because of the rep of the classics and the profit. Guys who understand the six like the mixers, but a bunch of the little mixers have ended up on the used pages of GC, this tells me they were sold because “ it’s SSL man”. They were sold to guys who have not ever used SSL and were disappointed and guy who expected 4K or 9K. Plus for the original mark of the modules I can buy a used mixer for about the price of 3-3.5. Sucks when you hurt your own product, seen it many times.

I actually pre-ordered a pair of those 500 strips when they were announced a year or two ago. Original price $300 - dealer said I'd have 'em in about 6-8 weeks... after about 6-8 months of waiting I bailed and bought other stuff. By the end of the year price was up to $400. Wonder if I'd have gotten my pre-order before the price increase? Hmm... Figured at the time they would be a cheap & cheerful way to stuff a couple empty 500 slots with something useful. Wasn't expecting any character, more like some clean serviceable gear. Clean preamp, bit of leveling if ya need it... and IMO 2 band EQ? Tracking? If the source is good & mic is hung in the right spot all you should need is a little tweak on the top or bottom. At this point I don't have empty slots and so its not that interesting to me anymore.

I agree 2 band EQ should be enough, if you have a good. If you have the skills and if you have the mics but even at $400 you are the exception as far as who is buying Moose! This is baby’s first SSL and they missed their window.

I dunno, these could be decent. Paging @soriantis… At this price if they are in stock not a bad bet, but if you like them and want more I would buy now because I’m betting they won’t be around for long. The irony is in 3 years you will probably make money selling used.

In short what are you expecting for the money?
They're decent ultilitarian tools that get the job done, if you want high amounts of sat and fattening look else where. They do remind me of a cut down version of the 9K strips as opposed to the 4k's, even then some preferred the 9K's. At this price point I've often sent stuff back without a second thought, however they're perfectly fine. If you want top notch that warps reality add a couple of K onto the price tag..

I'm wary of this latter day trend to jam an entire channel strip onto a relatively voltage-starved and small PCB. Now with that said, Solid State Logic is very, uhmm... solid state, so getting a basic preamp, eq, and one-knob comp onto that small footprint (and anemic trickle of amperage) is do-able. Like their consoles, it's integrated-circuit-city on there. Nobody in pro audio sits around and talks about the punch and goop of a series of THAT1512 and NE5532 IC's. But that's not, and really never has been, 'the SSL thing'.
They're workman-like and will get the job done. If I'm using an SSL preamp, it's their VHD, which has a nice 'mosfetty' drive to it you can dial in. But "let's use those SSL preamps" is not the sort of thing you'll hear people who've sessioned their desks say.
