I just watched the promo video. SSL added distortion (Waves SSL 4000 EV2), went with the bus comp instead of the channel strip compressor (they stole that from Sonimus Satson CS), oversampling, and modeled the distortion of the dbx fader VCA. Yes they modeled a fucking fader. What’s next?
I want a rotting tantalum capacitors smelling like a dead body fragrance aerosol can to spray my desk with. Make it one blast per emulated intermittent channel. Air fresheners that smell like the resin on unwashed pcbs heating up. Fumigate the made in China SSL gear with unfiltered Chinese cigarettes. Let’s get the old gear smell.

Now to my ear the music on that video sounds pretty awful, kinda grainy and overly compressed in a non musical way. Like it was captured in a rehearsal room with the condenser mic built into a 1980's "Beat box" Not my cup of tea personally.

That's how everything will be soon. Not if everyone refuses to subscribe it won't be. United we stand, divided we fall. Don't buy subscriptions and vendors will have no choice but to stop the business model as it will of failed.

Don't buy subscriptions and vendors will have no choice but to stop the business model as it will of failed. While I agree 100%, the vast majority of new users will simply know this as "normal". Older users will either quit or end up settling for subscriptions due to needing to continue working. Look at how many people continue to use and defend Pro Tools after they pulled the subscription switch. At work I use multiple electronic design programs and they've all gone subscription. We shell out 15K$ a year just to keep the licenses up. If we don't, the programs just stop working. At some point they simply told us that it was subscription or NOTHING. There was no "united we stand" since we need these things to work and there are no alternatives to choose from because the list of possible alternatives is very short and also ALL subscription. Ongoing revenue generation is the modern business model. The EULAs have been "leases" for a long time now, but nobody reads EULAs anyway. You don't even own the programs you use everyday like your computer's OS's. Those are all "indefinite leases" so that they don't have to warranty damages because they retain ownership.

That's how everything will be soon. Liking seams wrong, but so true subscription is the new software revenue model.

OK, like a dummy, I downloaded SSL native to play with it. Now I have subscribed. The Gate is wicked good. I like the verb, as well, and am playing with the 4KB - lol.

That's how everything will be soon. Then we'll be back to the pre-HD ProTools days where most independent engineers / PT-ops had every TDM plug-in out there [k]'d on a thumb drive.

I think ILOK is pretty much the same thing these days.. I've been a good boy. Even if I was 'evaluating' for much of my roaring/broke 20's, I don't now, and haven't had for well-over-a-decade, anything cracked on my system. Subscription models make so much of their money from people who aren't even using the software anymore - but keep forgetting to go through the levers and pulleys to turn off a $12/mo subscription.

Bob O has mentioned a couple of times that changes to the US tax code pretty much made subscription the default model for big software companies, on the 16th I’ll ask my software bigwig contact to explain.
The thing is you also have to realize the cash flow makes sense for the little guy as well, every time we have a major CPU, OS, or plugin format change we have also seen a bunch of good little developers fade into the night. These needed updates interrupt development schedules and are for the most part for those who have already bought in so the work doesn’t generate the same revenue that a new product will. So you will see even the smaller guys move that way for survival. Now go ask Neumann how much they would have loved to be able to simply “rent you” all your mics. Also how often are you going to weed out those subscriptions you no longer use?

Man, SSL is really improving his game! But your idea of the Stinky Studio Freshener just blew my mind. That's next-level creativity, my friend! And speaking of invention, have you considered making a cool logo representing your skills? You can pick any modern Design at www.namecheap.com/logo-maker/ideas/agriculture-logos/ and make it pretty cool. But let's remember the importance of good smells. Maybe we'll call your funky mixes "Vintage Vapors" or something like that, and that will become the whole vibe. Just don't forget to wear a mask when you spray that tantalizing smell around you, haha.
