I have an MCI JH-110 that I had started rebuilding as a mixdown machine, but find that I can't do the work anymore for medical reasons. The machine is set up as a 2 track 1/4", but is in a 4 track chassis and has an extra set of electronics (which needs the bracket to hold the meters. I am not sure if this set of electronics works) The heads work but need relapping. As I recall, I had the machine functioning* as a 2 track right before we had to move; it has not been worked on since. I am open to reasonable offers. Pick up only (60 miles north of SF). If interested, PM me.
*- transport was functioning, both channels passed audio. Would not say it was ready to use. Almost, but I didn't get that far. I may have the meter bracket somewhere but I'd have to search...

Well if you want to make it a thread... I have 2x MCI JH110 A's. I partially rebuilt one enough to work. They are very easy to work on, often slamming the drawers or jiggling the cables gets it running again. The Sony era brought some improvements, though I think it's mostly the same? Chris Mara now even offers new boards.. maramachines.com/parts/ - (check w/them to see if works with sony version) I went through and replaced any electrolytics on my 110-A. I also replaced all red sockets and any broken 741 chips. My takeaway: The red sockets allowed the IC pins to oxidize and breakdown. I used a pencil eraser to clean pins, if the pins broke during that then I put in a new 741. Probably 20% had a broken leg, so no wonder issues. The rest I just put back in, and new black IC sockets. Cheap and easy to fix, and really I think the Red ones would have been fine. After rebuild seems to work fine, only issue is the tape sensor doesn't know when tapes not loaded, so reels spin slowly until the tape is fully threaded. Counter I didn't recap and only works intermittently. Sony should be 10 years newer, should be in better shape. SOUND WISE I've been really impressed with both SM900 and SM911. I have some NOS 3m996 that also sounds good, but not as good as I remember and I think RTM is a better option. I don't know if my 996 is out of spec or what? For RTM it took me a few full passes of the same reel to dial in a good response, after which I didn't notice any dropout and it even seemed to play better for me. One reel will last a very long time if you want/need it to. NO TAPE: I sometimes use it on 2bus in input mode and just get the MCI electronics sound at the end, so there's that. You can also drive it hard into fuzz if you want, I really like the way the gain works on these. Slapback: This is pure absolute gold, 3 speeds.. and VARI... but you'd really need a mixer with EQ and patch bay to get the most out of it. ReAMP: drums get the thick low end thing. Surprisingly I can get it pretty close to a digital vibe in the highs, hard to notice a difference some times but when I listen close its obvious. MIXDOWN: I like to grab it live right off the repro head, that gives me timing that is locked to the original file. So if I need to punch in, ie dropout or distortion, its not an issue. Capture and Rewind for stuff I care about though. If you are thinking of a way to get the tape sound with minimal effort, I think this is the best way. 3 speeds= covers everything from Tascam style lofi to highest quality 30ips

Happy belated birthday! If possible, I hope you feel better soon John. Chris
