The quality of “mid-level” drums like these has really surprised me. These Catalinas and stuff like the recent Yamaha Stage Customs are very well made in general and have great sturdy hardware. The only things that are typically awful are the fake Remo heads that usually come stock. Gotta swap those out before the drums really come to life!

They are great! Some of the best drum sounds I have recorded were Catalinas (helped that the drummer was great!)

I have never been wowed by them but they are serviceable. I do have a lot of nice drums though (being a drummer and all). You can find some wildly good kits for cheap if you keep an eye out - you could do better than Catalinas for the money.
Starclassic performers or some made in England Premier kits can be found for dirt cheap. Same with Artstar II or old Granstars (though granstar deals are pretty rare these days).
