Every time I run into an issue with that site, I promise myself, "that's it, I'm done. No mas, Papi." Especially since Etsy bought the site and started charging 5% and this whole "bump rate" thing, which sounds awful cosa nostra ("great listing, shame if nobody ever saw it...") I sold a bus compressor to a guy who I could kinda tell from a lot of his tire-kicking questions was maybe not really totally up on how to use one and had some unrealistic expectations ("is this a glue compressor?"). And sure enough, after a day the questions start flooding in. Of course he thinks it's broken. I ask him for some pics of the settings and yeah, it wasn't broken (but if you have the threshold set to -30, the ratio to inf:1, and the attack and release times 'turned all the way up', it's not gonna sound very good). He wants a refund because he doesn't like the sound. I reply "sorry, but that's not how this works." He (of course) makes a beef which thankfully, Reverb takes my side on. Meanwhile, I had bought a couple of EQ's with the proceeds. Made an offer on a pair, the seller accepted in an hour. Three days go by, no tracking number or shipment notification. No response to my messages. So now I have to go through that whole thing. Yeah, sorry, it's just a rant - but holy crap - if you're gonna sell something on there? Ship it. If you're gonna buy something on there? Know what you're buying, and know that you're agreeing to my terms and conditions like "no refunds unless damaged or non-operational". This isn't Amazon. How is this hard for people to understand???!!!

I've had all kinds of issues as well, but I think about half of them were attempted fraud anyway.

Heh, lately every listing gets one of these every few days. Same text, different account/email address. I loved this one because the reply was about an EQ (calling it an 'instrument' would be a bit tenuous)
"Hi there! I'm quiet interested in the instrument, it looks amazing, I really do hope it's still available because I want to get it as a gift for my girlfriend, she doesn't know about it lol she plays jazz and classical music as an instrumentalist, she's also a record producer. This is my work email [fakeaccount]@gmail.com Kindly hit me up, lets have a deal.
Best regards "
That's some pretty "Nigerian Prince"-level attempted scamming, right there.
EDIT: Fleabay/Reverb occasionally are good for archaic stuff. I was able to find some NOS MAT02 transistors that I needed and they worked great!

Does Reverb ask for social security number before sending payments? I recently sold a couple pieces on the new Sweetwater Gear Exchange. I opted for Paypal to receive my payments, as I already have a Paypal account. Now gear exchange is insisting I provide an SS# before issuing payment. No mention of this previously, and now I feel trapped. Really pissed off ATM.

After starting to sell gear on Reverb at the end of 2021, I quickly found out that the process changed in 2022 due to the new tax laws which now requires those sites to 1099 you if you sell more than $600 TOTAL. The whole $600 total threshold for sales has made me avoid Reverb and Ebay if at all possible, and especially so if I lost a receipt from 15 years ago, etc. Not to defend Reverb, but I imagine they are less than thrilled with the $600 threshold, as it is preventing the average Joe from really using the site for sales. Nobody is going to reliably support those types of websites for selling unless they are running an actual business. Assuming you take the typical 8% Reverb fee hit on the sale, and then need to fork over another, say, 15% on the 1099. you're getting crushed. At that point, its just easier to take your stuff to Guitar Center and get paid without any of the tax headaches or shipping hassles.
Reverb did need my SSN and billing info to payout on my 2022 sales. I made a separate bank account specifically for Reverb/Ebay/etc just so I had at least an additional buffer between the web and my personal info.
As far as being a seller, I try to outline everything on my posts and store page just so I'm covered as much as possible. Thankfully, I haven't had any issues yet.
As a buyer, I just recently had a seller go silent for about 5 days, but they resurfaced and explained what happened. Sometimes you just need to be patient if possible. Total radio silence for like a week would be a complete red flag for me.

All of the sudden Craigslist is starting to look good again. You know, the thrill of wondering if you’ll come back from the sale alive is always a hoot. As are the terrible scam attempts and lowball offers. My favorite is when somebody offers you a super shoddy price, but make a point to tell you they’re paying cash. Like… dude…. What did you think people use on CL? Beads? Wampum?
I hate the internet sometimes. I mean, y’all are okay. But those “other people”….

No Venmo, PayPal, cash app, any of that shit. People all over cl are using apps instead of straight cash. I'm always emailing saying that I'll come immediately as well. No back and forth bs. Here my off, coming to get it asap, and straight cash...take it or leave it. People definitely bite when the deal is right there.

I listed my WA47 and ASAT on cl this week, instantly my phone was flooded with nearly the exact same scam responses over and over again from different numbers. It’s pretty depressing. Some people seem to like fb marketplace, but I really dislike that company way more than eBay or Etsy. Ugh.

I have been using my local kijji, with really great results: total costs of using Reverb now are crazy.
