I've wanted the UAD Studer for a while now, but I have a $50 coupon from Slate, and their Studer is on sale for $99, so it would cost me $49, ugh..
The thing is, I had Slate's Studer once, and didn't like it, but I was just starting then, so perhaps I might understand it better now. I'm trying to talk myself into it, but the UAD Ampex is so good, I'm sure their Studer kills.

I don't use it on every track tho. My MO now is every plug-in is a tone or dynamics control.

You can get nice stuff out of the UAD tape sims. I really tend to like those over the Slate versions. I have to say - the Slate version, when not being pushed into distortion is very subtle to me. Well, besides a big bass buildup...and that just sounds like EQ to me...I don't really get smacky tape sounds out of any of them though...

DBX 160 $99.... that's just the one I was wanting Behaves like the hardware. Yeah it really does, I was floored by the demo, and the Gods were looking upon me because my demo is over in 2 days and I was about to drop the $199, love when that happens.

DBX 160 $99.... that's just the one I was wanting Behaves like the hardware. So true! I had a couple of hardware DBX 160VU for several years and when UA released their software DBX 160VU (was a while ago), it was so little difference between the hardware and software plugin so I sold my pair of DBX 160VU hardware. Great on bass drum, snare and bass /H

Ocean Way. The most expensive one they have and for a reason. Stellar plugin.

Thanks levon, John,I appreciate the input while I'm thinking on it. really . If memory serves, I too found the Slate tape sim a little overblown in the low end, but it really has been a long time. I also have the Kramer tape sim in my Waves bundle. I've only used it a few times when I run out of UAD dsp power, and it did seem to work decently, but I only used a pinch of it in my recipe. Since I already have that, perhaps I should stop thinking about the Slate. I think what I'd like to do is print with it a little, just as if committing a track to tape. If I use the Slate or the Kramer, I have to use my computer's processing power, and I'm at the edge of that cliff already, so the UAD is a better option, though more expensive.
I've never printed with my UAD Ampex, I wonder if I'd prefer the Studer, or do I already have all I need.. maybe I should demo them. I hesitate to demos anything Slate, the last time I did, iLok shut me out of my own projects because the demo expired, even though I'd bought the plug in the interim. It took three frickin' days to resolve.
I'll most like get a mac mini in November/December, that might help with the dsp situation.

I like the way the Kramer plug "compresses" or at least seems to change the sound of the snare when you play with the drive setting (whatever the middle knob is)...
