Hi everyone,
I have a Handcrafted Labs Varis Compressor, that stopped compressing. I have been working with HCL on a solution but, since I’m really NOT a tech its beyond my capabilities. So, can anyone recommend a tech on the east coast ? I’am from Lancaster, Pa
Thanks everyone

Most analog gear doesn’t really need a pro audio specialist repair shop, 85 % of my repair needs are handled by the local stereo repair guys. The one thing these days some parts are still hard to find so I always authorize a specific fee limit before needing additional approval, that way if it’s say a simple cap or 2 they can just order it rather than playing phone tag and watching the price go up because the caps they quoted are gone.

As long as you have a schematic and Handcraft Labs is willing to sell/provide parts (if it’s not an off the shelf product) any electronics repair person (even guitar amp repair) should be able to do it for you
I’d also reach out to any area professional recording studios or audio companies and ask them if there’s a local person they use

Yeah... if you have schematics or the company is willing to help a local shop almost anyone who builds/repairs your standard tube guitar amps should be able to get through a repair.
Like they don't really advertise it but I've brought outboard to Fuchs in Clifton NJ... patched up my Dakings, an 1176... couple other things besides the typical Fenders & Marshalls. Not super uncommon to see dbx 160VU's or an old LA2A on their bench. Not everyday but they'll do some of that work.
Who's the guy in town that you'd bring an old 4 hole Marshall plexi to? Call him.

Or just mail it back to them. The time you spend going back and forth with them and trying to find the right tech near you could be shipping it back to them fixing for real and getting it back to you….,

For built in the last 10-20 years - if the company is still in biz - this is the way to handle it IMO. Especially if you are not in a major recording area like NYC, LA, NV, etc..

I think HCL is in Kiev, Ukraine. I am not sure how the war has affected them. They do have a facebook page with recent posts and you can try contacting them on their website. And I hope HCL still has a lot of support from pro audio people around the world. I have their thermos eq and it is fabulous.

I feel your pain. I am from Lancaster too. My favorite tech locally is Rick Coberly. He is a legend. He toured with The Jacksons and was one of the main techs at the original Live Aid. Pre-Covid he was touring with YES as Steve Howes personal assistant. Which made it tough to connect. He would fix things for me off and on if he was off the road. Currently he works for a backline company in Harrisburg. He may be taking repairs out of that shop. I believe it's called Reliable Backline. Feel free to reach out to me for further questions or an update. reliablebackline.net/

I have had spectacular experience with Rick.He rebuilt a silver-face Princeton Reverb and a black-panel Deluxe Reverb for me, and they are entirely different creatures now, all for the better.
Reaching him can absolutely be a challenge. I have an email address, but he doesn't seem to monitor that. I don't know when he picks up his phone, but it's never when I call, and I don't think it's personal. One time I called a neighbor there and asked them to check on him. That got me a callback.
It's a 3 hour drive, but always well worth it.
