I'm using a Y-Splitter from the monitor outs of my Apollo interface. One is going to a pair of Spiral Grooves, the other to a Mackie Big Knob (which controls a second pair of monitors, a mixcube, and a sub). I originally picked up a Big Knob to use just for a talkback, but have since added more monitoring. I ran it this way because I don't want my Spiral Grooves (main mixing monitor) to run through the colored Big Knob. I am looking to upgrade my monitor controller, but until then, will using a splitter from my interface have any adverse impact on my mixing monitors?

Y type splitters can be an issue sometimes, as load impedances can be different at DC and at various frequencies. This can cause errant reflections of the signal and other strange anomalies if the impedances are too far off, I.E., one line level load is 10k, the other is 50k.. Also, two of the same load impedances in parallel going to ground effectively look like half the original impedance. I.E., 10k ohm line level impedance looks like 5k to the source and so on.. this is all under the assumption that the source can even drive that low of a load.

Y splitters just make me nervous...no logical reason...it just seems like it would degrade the signal.

Y splitters just make me nervous...no logical reason...it just seems like it would degrade the signal. We recently had a conversation about balanced line level Y splitters, in the context of no latency monitoring, after mic pre's and pre A/D converters. I bought 2 of the Sweetwater offerings out of that thread. No issues so far..
