An Expressor sounds like the ideal tracking compressor. An 1176 works great for me but I have regretted pushing a few dB too far from time to time.
Yes, there's is little reason to use tracking compressors nowadays but I like to have my tracks as ready to mix as possible.
Is the Expressor more forgiving than a 1176?

Is the Expressor more forgiving than a 1176? Absolutely. 100X's more forgiving. You can almost just plug it in, and not even look at it. I've had sessions where it was compressing 15-20dB and I didn't even realize it was in the chain because it was out of the sightline.

Yeah, but at mix that can be problematic, it’s just to easy to squeeze the life out of something and not notice till you try to put it all together. An example was I had this client who would track with an Expressor on snare with a gain reduction of about 20 dB and it just wouldn’t mesh with the rest of the kit, ironically he did a terrible job of micing the kit as far as isolation so the snare was bleeding into every thing so you didn’t need much of the snare mic.

Yes, of course. I don't recommend it. . But the 661 is so transparent that it can sneak up on you if you're not careful. Doesn't have the artifacts of an 1176.

It would be great if Audioscape could find a way (legally) to make a stereo aphex 651. Jim Williams could probably be a good advisor on that as well. (And make a better power cable )

(And make a better power cable Modded compellor like that video and a stereo 651/661 hybrid without the tube. The only things close now are the dangerous compressor, crane song, daking (these are also stupid cheap for how good they are) and a few digital things you can count on your fingers.
