Need some sage advice, and hoping you gents can help.
I'm in need of a monitor controller. Here's my setup:
From my Apollo Quad I'm running a Y-cable. One split is going to a pair of Spiral Grooves, the other to a Mackie Big Knob, which serves to control a pair of Quested S7R's, a mixcube, a sub, and talkback. I know the Big Knob is a real piece, but I do my critical mixing through my SG's, and track with my Questeds (though I wonder how the splitter from the Apollo is affecting things).
Anyways, I've been looking at things like the D-Box or a used Gain Train, both would fill my needs of three outs, mono, and talkback. My question is, would I benefit from the D-Box's DAC? How is it compared to the Apollo? I know it does summing too, but I always hear that the effects are minimal when summing that few of channels. I would love something like the Great River MixMaster, but kinda out of my league at the moment. Curious to know what you think? Should I go for something like a gain train and upgrade my DAC later on (say something like a Burl), or would something like a D-Box be worth the investment with my setup?

Yeah, I did see the McTwo. But now we're getting into Dangerous price territory, and don't know of the NOS reputation as much as I know of the Dangerous reputation around the threads. I coulda snagged a McOne for about two bills, but think I want to stay with an active controller to avoid any impedance issues, plus it'd be really handy to have talkback.

I actually love the fact that the MCone is passive. No chance to change the sound.

I actually love the fact that the MCone is passive. No chance to change the sound. quality passive is superior in sound quality 99 times out of 100 imv, and if D-box stands for dangerous? i'm personally not impressed with those either, i don't care how many people say its good, I will extend that maybe the one i heard was hooked up to some other things that were making it sound bad? i don't know for sure. the ultimate set up is this imv great DAC, quality passive attenuator, great power amp, great passive monitors. This and some serious attention to the acoustics in your room will make every piece of gear you own tell the truth 8)
