"I'am absolutely in love with the EQ84!!!!! A touch of 10 kHz changes everything, including the mix buss. You really nailed the Neve saturation sound - it’s so musical and satisfying to the ear." - Greg Wells
So Greg is a guy I admire quite a bit. I love his work and really gained an appreciation for him after watching his "start to finish" video on Puremix(produced, tracked, mixed a song at Sunset).
Anywho, all that out of the way, I had to try the Gem84 after reading that. It's on sale now, I believe, and so I purchased it. It's quite nice, really. They claim no oversampling is needed with their DSP, however the option is there. Unsure about any of that but I do like the sound. It also is fully sweepable and not locked into frequency points, but there is a slight "detent" to the traditional points making it easy to snap to them. The saturation is nice to my ear. Overall a good plug I think.
Any thoughts from users here?

In regards to Greg and that puremix video, how about that U47 right over the kick drum shell technique he picked up from Eric Valentine? Man, when he blended that in the drum kit sounded so huge! Awesome tip. I highly recommend that whole series for anyone interested, here is the drum technique:

I picked up that mono mic trick from a video with Greg and Pensado I think. It's worked wonders. Sometimes I go lofi with a 12 gauge red shell omni mic or a ribbon strategically placed can be cool too.

I use that overkick mic thing whenever I'm tracking someone playing a 1 up/1 down kit. It's a really great spot to get slap/clap/stick out of a drum kit. Some careful placement and intentional mic selection and you have yourself a super useful sound!

I use an old EV RE50 in approximately that spot and it’s one of my favorite things. Leave it untouched or squash it good with a comp, sounds so cool either way.

I like this one and use it from time to time. Definitely worth having at a sale price.

So, I've been playing with some eq combinations on my sub-mixes just to see what the results would be like if I one day end up with Prometheus and Hyperion and I started with the UAD Pultec 1A and Softube Trident A-Range. After playing around a while, I decided to boost 8k for instrument busses and 10k for vocal busses. Then use the Trident to filter out the highest and lowest frequencies and add any other eq if I want. Those results were pretty good. Then today I try some of the other UAD eqs I don't own to see if there's any reason for me to do this 2 for $99 sale. None of the ones I could still demo really did the trick. Next up I go back to look at other eqs I've liked and tried the EQ84 again to take the place of the 1A. Boost the input one notch. This boost coupled with the 10k boost was really transformative as Greg Wells said above. Sometimes I engage the HPF too. Glad I stumbled onto this trick but wish I would have tried this last year when reading this thread. Placing the Trident before or after is a matter of taste. Usually I'm placing it after. I'll have to see if the UAD version is any better. The 1A is much cleaner than the 84 and this thread popped up in the Google generative AI btw.
