Very nice! I guess the preamp in the 1073 and the 1084 is the same? Loved the checklist!

Looks great and nice price.
For those that don’t know Colin offers some of the most comprehensive and easy to understand instructions of anyone out there.

Hey gang,
Has anyone tried one of these? How do they measure up to the AML 1073 or a BAE 1084?

Hey gang, Has anyone tried one of these? How do they measure up to the AML 1073 or a BAE 1084? I’m gonna answer my own question for anyone stumbling on this later… I ordered a pair of 1084s, and have just done a couple sessions (drums, bass). I used a radial mic splitter to compare the AML 1073 ez and 1084. Even with the EQs engaged for both, the wav forms were as identical as I figure I could make them whole volume matched. This for me has meant that these 1084 are thrusted to be one of the best deals going and I suspect I’ll get another couple of them. They’re as good sonically as the 1073, but are cheaper, and have more features (output control, instrument in, and of course the additional EQ points). Stellar all around.

Thanks for the report! I’ve been curious about these, too.

I've built 2 of these in kit form. One of the hardest builds I've ever built. 12 PCBs AND OVER 700 PARTS PER UNIT. OTHERWISE GREAT PREs, EQs and value.

Saw that you can get them build, assembled and tested. Interested in 3 channels of ez1084 or 6 ez1073pre for one lunchbox. Colin, do you know how it is with the customs fee to Sweden when the UK is not with the EU anymore. I understand that the EU and UK have a trade and cooperation agreement which means that if you have a declaration of origin for your goods, you can avoid paying customs duty. Could be wrong? KR Håkan

I built a pair and built the 1073s as well when they were available as a kit. The 1084 kits are great sounding, but it is a very involved kit to build (much more so than the 1073). The components are very tightly spaced to fit everything in a 500 frame. Unless you've built a lot and are good with tight spaces, you might want to have Colin and his crew do the build. Its well worth what he charges.

i always hesitated to go lunchbox/500 … but this one is so tempting. I did too... Now that I have a 500 box in my outboard, I have zero regrets. Just don't cheap out on the chassis-even good ones don't have to be crazy expensive.

One of the hardest builds I've ever built. How is it compared to the CAPI VP28? If you 've ever built one of those, that is.

I’ve never build ez1084 but I’ve built both capi vp28 and ez1073+addon eq. I assume that ez1084 has more features that means there’s a lot of components than vp28. It’s not necessarily mean more difficult but…

Also interested in the VP28-to-1084 assembly comparison haha!
I use a pair of VP28 across mix busses sometimes. Would 1084s be just as cool? Or at least a different flavor of cool? Obviously you’d get some EQ options in there versus the 28.

Before designing the Silver Bullet I used VP28's and AML 1073's (but never the EQ) on the mix buss with Eisen LiLPEQr EQ's.
