Been hanging out on Sierra for a while and decided to update from 10.12.3 to 10.12.6 the other day. A bunch of stuff went all wonky... mostly, it's plugins that suddenly won't load in Reaper.
Strangely, some of those same plugins load fine in AudioHijack, just not in the DAW. I've tried different versions of Reaper, as well as switching between AU/VST/VST3. I also tried running Disk Repair to no avail.
I'm also getting generally buggy system behavior, Chrome is suddenly super laggy and slow compared to Firefox, and I keep getting "fontworker quit unexpectedly" errors.
I would expect this kind of stuff after a major OS update, but this is kind of surprising to me.
Anyone had this happen before? How'd you deal with it?

Backup / wiped the system and did a fresh install.. Man, I'm dreading having to do that haha! I hope there's a few other things I can try first. This is what I get for not organizing everything better...

if I were in your shoes, I would first ensure that I have a full backup of the last stable OS on my system. After that, I would actually update the system to something quite a bit newer. Not the newest, but the final version of Big Sur, maybe. The most recent versions of your plugins should work great there, whereas Sierra is pretty old at this point, and maybe something crept in with one or more of your plugins in an update where the company just doesn’t test as far back as Sierra now.

Great suggestion, I think this will be one of the next things I try. Fingers crossed it goes over smoothly — thanks, Mark!

This is why once my recording machine is stable I turn OFF any and all updates.

This is why once my recording machine is stable I turn OFF any and all updates. Yeah, I was pretty set on staying on 10.12.3, as it had been super reliable for several years. I only opted to update because I was troubleshooting an issue with my iMessages not syncing properly between my phone/Mac... it seemed like a pretty harmless move, but I guess I was wrong. Ah well.
