Got my cinemag transformers for the Panther ribbon mod so I will redo my video shoot out. I had never recorded/mixed in blumlien before : that was very interesting !
don't know if it good technique but with the pan knob on each channel seems you can control the amount of stereo info from centre/mono out to full stereo but also 3d stereo not just panned: interesting to situate say just the vocal or an instrument soloed/featured in mix !
discuss amongst ourselves !?

Blumlein is a fantastic technique. Actually one of my personal favorites! In fact I'm often a bit bummed by how underused, or even how many people don't even know it exists! Its really great for groups of musicians or room mics. Its also useful if you're tracking something that you want in stereo but may need to collapse the stereo field after the fact in a mix, since its a "coincident" type technique and the two microphones end up picking up very little of the same information, unless you're way away from the source...but then its not really stereo anymore then is it?
Plus as an added bonus. A pair of mics in a blumlein configuration looks pretty bad ass when they're set up!

I use it if I'm only playing one Acoustic part - just to make it bigger...I would imagine it's badass on a string quartet.

It's my favorite stereo mic'ing technique on a main acoustic track, choir or ensemble. It's got incredible depth. I personally dislike MS intensely, and to me, Blumlein is its antithesis. It's real.

I'm a fan of Blumlein (the original stereo technique) as well, and it's a pity that there aren't as many opportunities to use it as there once were. I still do some location classical music (small ensembles), and venues just get noisier and noisier. Whether it's heating/AC or traffic, I fight ambient noises a little more every year. Audiences seem to be noisier than they once were as well. It's sad the Blumlein is so vulnerable to environmental schmutz. But if you're lucky enough to record in a quiet location, it's always worth hanging a Blumlein pair to see what you get. With good mics and nice time-aligned speakers, it's amazing just how far out that stereo image can go.

Regarding noisey audiences, I have noticed for years that people are clueless as to how their behavior affects a social situation. I stopped going to movie theaters years ago because of the lack of common decency people were showing - talking throughout the whole show, getting up and down to go do anything but actually watch the show and looking at their devices instead of the show. Nothing worse, IMO, than having to fight the glare of several devices in rows in front of you, when you're trying to see what's going on. Just not worth the cost of a ticket. Same thing is happening everywhere. We are creating a society that can not sit still and pay attention to anything for more than a few minutes. Few seconds, maybe? Church, movies, theater, school plays/concerts - it's all the same. WTF. Sorry to go OT.

This starts with mu iphone but about 1/3 through voice over switches to blumlien using the panthers through my warm audio tb12s using john hardy 990+c op amps and only natural room ambiance
In comparison to xy and ms the blumlien 3d bubble is just cool !

First of all, you shouldn't be singing because your voice is so DAMNED interesting that it completely takes me mind off anything else. Holy crap, KC, your voice is mesmerizing... and I don't say that to fellas very often!
Secondly... Oktavamod? WOW, what a sound. What are the details on this? Mods made? And just out of curiosity, what are the deets on the guitar being used too?

Ward why thank you, just going for the right intuitive feel, the situation of the people who are the subjects of this song means a great deal to me, (as cowboy and a bunch of the regulars here know), so I hope that that is what you are experiencing octava 12 modded by michael joli, the octava is like an 84 and joli tweaks them to make them quieter; flatter and more accurate; to freq and for transient response a stock larrivee, mahogany with spruce top, but I use a handmade custom british string called newtone, phosphor bronze master class med light (54-12); wonderful strings, solid core; just putting them on my guitar makes it feel like it got a custom set up and those strings have been on the guitar for a while now too also guitar is in a G tuning and as you can tell i mostly play without a pick and go for the extra texture with longer nails on picking hand; wait till you hear the rest of the song; genuinely very proud of it stay tuned same bat station same bat channel ! when I do the transfo mod with the cinemags on the panthers, i will do another shootout and video and I am practising playing "cindi's dreamin" all the way through and see what people think. I always loved the story of when a beatle had written a new song, at first they would audition/play it for everyone in the studio, including martin and then afterward; they would all discuss the song and work out what they called a "head arrangement" and then they would record that; must have been very very cool to have been hearing Beatle songs raw for the very first time; just vox and guitar ! I can just imagine; julia, strawberry fields, across the universe, ect.;special times again thank you for your compliments much appreciated, as a singer/songwriter,

Thanks kcatthedog . I am very familiar with Larrivee guitars and know their 'sound'. So the secrets are definitely in that microphone which sounds like an M582 or KM54 only without the noise or hum...and of course, in those strings too!
