Sounds nice. Vintage mode certainly reminds me of My U87ai.

They all sound a little flat to me. They kind of reminded me of a U47 FET. Definitely excellent quality, but wouldn't jump at this as a main vocal mic. Chad makes great gear and is reliable and friendly. I'd buy from him any day.
Whatever you do John, I'd recommend holding on to that Soyuz mic, it sounded world class on your voice.

Dude, that sounds GREAT. I actually like the modern setting on your voice. A lot. Really nice sense of air. That Helios pre is a match made in heaven. Totally kills the Apollo (sorry for the hyperbole, the Apollo still sounds good, but the 0011 is better ).

"Modern" sounded like a properly EQ'd... U87ai on your voice. And for the lesser "AE's" out there, like me-That's a good thing. Chris

Tested one last night next to my Notre Dame. The UT 87 has less low end than the 47 clone ND but it's a good thing- I usually end up rolling off the ND's lows anyway. I prefer the Modern setting but Vintage works too, only needing a bit of mid-high shelf to add some fairy dust to the top. Sibilance was not an issue on a country-tinged male tenor but we have not yet put the mic fully through its paces. My first impression is that it's a good mic and will be added to the locker soon. It will not replace the ND but we never anticipated that it would. For us, my vocalist will use it to record at his place and it will be excellent for that.

You can really hear the headbasket, just like a real U87. I always blame it on the headbasket, but in fact, it's the capsule that resonates in the 4-5k range, just a tiny bit, enough to annoy me enough to remove it sometimes and just make sure there's enough distance and a proper pop filter is in place. Even though the vintage mode carries a little more water, I think I prefer it. It's a slight difference but it's there. Johnkenn, Your voice sounds great when it's hoarse.

Yeah I preferred the vintage mode because with my voice, the modern would occasionally get a little sibilant in modern.

OK I was thinking as I walked by the Radondo Beach marina and the Cheesecake Factory where Alesis used to wine and dine us ( those who know the designer will get this connection) damn it we need someone not at all affiliated with United to build and market a head basket for this thing! I mean every 87 clone that hasn’t bumped against the Neumann patten has had these problems, you can reach for the EQ, but it then becomes a big phase issue unless you go really broad. Don’t get me wrong I understand why they do it the way they do and if these guys had asked me how to do the head basket I would have said “ don’t copy the original unless you want to make your lawyer rich” but man we have to have some recordist which the skills who could make us something on the QT or maybe a head basket in side a head basket?
