MRTX Studio, HDX PCIE + Pro Tools Ultimate perpetual, Rackmount TB chassis for PCIE and S3 controller. Right on. MTRX definitely looks cool and no doubt would sound great, but it's overkill for our setup here. We don't need the MTRX's monitor control or headphone facilities, since we already have the D-Command with Xmon (for monitoring) and Furman headphone distribution. I've never used a S3, but I've always thought it was pretty lacking in controls. It would be hard for me to move from a D-Command with dedicated EQ and Dynamics controls, as well as control for our XMon. But Pro Tools with HDX (and our Auroras w/LTHD cards - Pro Tools sees Avid HD i/o interfaces) is absolutely essential in our setup, working with so many hardware inserts. I wouldn't even think of using anything else. We still have a backup HD Accel rig that was great too, just Pro Tools HD10 is as far as it goes. Unless someone can show me a DAW that handles hardware inserts as seamlessly as Pro Tools HDX with Avid/Lynx w/LTHD converters. From what I read, every other DAW option, and even Pro Tools with third party interfaces, is a struggle. Yeah, were I purchasing a HDX system, I'd be doing the same thing using the Aurora (n) as my ad/da.

I think I've pretty much decided how this is going down.. Either HDX or a Looptrotter Modular 500 console, got in touch with LT today and support was instant.. Amazing stuff.. Then you look at half the stuff it can do and yeah, not bad for the price considering. Also the channels can be used in bypass or partial so instead of swallowing the entire up front cost of a fully featured console and having a bunch of stuff you don't need or want it's flexible. Also I have quite a bit of 500 stuff already plus it would remove the need for patch bays and tons of cabling.
I'd have liked automation but I guess it's one thing less to worry about, also it should be easy to troubleshoot.
Until I can afford either I've plenty to be getting on with like song writing, practicing and recording. I already have more than enough tracking HW and an interface so no problems there. The SSL is done for though..

I've been eyeing the Looptrotter console for awhile, but can't find much (any) info about what's on the inside. I'd love to hear more.

I'll create a thread for it when I've find out more and I'll see if IAA can do anything for me as well.. Ultimately there's quite a few viable options here so I'm happy with the outcome. I pulled out the patch bays, cabling throws and amalgamated some of the HW / sent it back today. It's so much cleaner and less prone to issues now, for me personally I'd like to keep it that way.

Not to be argumentative, but I've always thought the LiLo was really beautiful. The features, for hybrid, are incredible. I agree, it’s an awesome looking pice. It just doesn’t have the right name on it (Neve, API, SSL) to get a lot of folks super hyped on it. For what it’s worth I built myself a sort of 4 channel unit inspired by the viaFaders. Perfect for post compression OTB mix moves. Very cool, man! That's great.

Really just skimming the thread, as much of this is beyond me. But wishing you well on your quest! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Chris

Amongst the recabling and monitor testing I managed to look deep into Logics I/O plugin. It did take a bit of coaxing until the ping function worked as expected but once the sample compensation "gripped" there weren't any obvious signs of comb filtering (which was my primary concern).
The coolest thing about this setup is the ability to stack HW as part of a plugin chain, I used Ozone and my HW Bettermaker mastering limiter in conjunction with each other, set the BM to M/S mode which sounds the best to me but tends to crap out long before an ITB limiter. Slap Ozone in front of it and you get the best of both worlds which is awesome.
After having a lot of issues with Pro Tools 8 / 9 native and playing the lottery with some plugins I still don't fully trust ITB setups. Yes, I'm sure a lot of them are probably fine and I was just unlucky, still even in a nostalgic sense I was looking forward to getting in front of a desk again. However I think for now at least Logic will do the trick even if the workflow is a bit alien..

From what I read, every other DAW option, and even Pro Tools with third party interfaces, is a struggle. Yup. I've used PT HD native with HW Inserts and it worked fine. More recently I expanded my i/o count up to 96 and went thunderbolt to avoid moving up to HDX. Now hardware inserts don't get the correct delay compensation in PT and it's just a mess. On the other hand in Logic Pro hardware inserts work just fine with thunderbolt (once you do the ping). So it's a PT issue. I've moved over to Logic so not really a big deal for me atm but I did keep the HD cards for the aurora's just in case I end up moving back over to PT.

My initial tests with a few pieces of outboard have been good, but I'm going to soon stress test it with a lot more to see if it can hold up. I really tried to make the SSL x-desk + x-panda work like a mini console like you with the big six, but at the end of the day it was a real pita not having more routing and the lack of automation meant I had to push into compressors which really sucked. Good luck to you!
