Soldering a couple of snakes for reamping at the moment. I punted on the vise I was using awhile back because it was super heavy to carry and store.
I've got a soldering "station" I threw together years ago that's about the size of a 15" laptop made out of MDF. Using a Weller thing with a couple of clips on it and a weighted base, but it kinda sucks and can't hold a female XLR body worth a shit.
Any recommendations on a good, sort of small vise that I can screw down to MDF for XLR-type work with cables and snakes? The Weller gets dragged off if I don't support the cables.

I use panavise..
Big trick is to get a board of some type, I use a 12"x12" piece of 1/2" thick wood to bolt the vise to. That way it doesn't try to tip over as you work with heavy cables and such.

Thanks for the suggestions! Microcenter has the Panavise so I'm going to go grab two this morning, one to hold the body and one to hold the cable in place.
Same here on the board. 19mm MDF so I'll screw them in place to it.

Same here on the board. 19mm MDF so I'll screw them in place to it. I typically use the panavise to hold the connector for soldering. I hold the cable in my left hand to feed the conductors into the pre-tinned cups on the connectors and of course hold the iron in my right hand. I will then go back and add more solder if needed after I have the conductors in place. |

Panavise Jr here. I've got the female threads embedded in my bench, so I remove the vise when I'm not using it.

like many others suggested... Panavise! I got one when I started soldering up circuits about 17 years ago and still have it and use it when I need to solder up anything... it has always been great!
