I have a 2019 MBP, I9, 32G ram, 1TB drive.
Any thoughts on upgrading to M1Max now? Seems like I can't lose, I'm told it would be twice the performance and that the M2 isn't due until 2023.

Rob, I assume you're trying to stay with a laptop form factor? If so, now is an excellent time to upgrade. If you were trying to move to a Mac Mini, I would advise waiting for an update that should come this year.

Thanks for confirming - yes, I need to stay with the form factor due to other uses and needs.

Ya, unless someone is offering you a screaming deal, hood off for a few weeks, just in case apple surprises us.

I'm def sold on 14" or 16" with M1Max/64ram/4T. I wouldn't be happy with a 13"

UPDATE: I ordered the MBP M1 Max 64GB/2T. Won't be here until April. Benchmarks put it twice as fast as my 2019 MBP. that will come in handy with large sessions and Empirical Labs plugins as a channel strip. They are a little CPU hungry but sound killer.

I just don't understand you Mac guys. You guys are always upgrading every 2ish years. Why?
I typically run my recording PCs for 6-8 years depending on if I'm changing my workflow.

Depends on the guy =) I've been running a 2012 Mac mini for what seems forever. A bunch of studio guys run ProTools rigs on older macs (like cheese grater macs), and just don't ever upgrade.
I have a really old iMac ($80!) in the shop, that runs windows, for mic measurement.
There's certainly not an upgrade requirement...

I ran my last iMac from 2011 - 2021. svart for a non Mac user, you sure are active in all these Mac threads. I can’t imagine seeking out and chiming in to endless PC threads to let the people know that I don’t use the computer they’re talking about. 😎

I upgrade every 10 years with my Mac. 10 years seems to be the medium working lifespan of a mac. compared to that i find the prices rather fair. my previous mac run from 1997-2007 and 2007-2016.

Mac threads number in the hundreds here and are added to daily. And I was just wondering because I can't imagine spending thousands every other year for a new computer and I was wondering why it seemed so ubiquitous to do so with macs.

I'm still on my 2013 era MacPro trashcan in the studio, even as I type this on a 14" M1 64gig Max laptop. Maybe I'll hook this up to the studio, but I'd have to upgrade a lot of software and some hardware to do it. I'm getting too old to fiddle with things that aren't broken.

If you’re not running out of cpu use or ram and it’s behaving half decently, there’s no point to buy another computer until it breaks, especially if it’s a good 5-10 years old and you won’t get anything for it used to go towards a new machine. Just a waste of money. Just backup your files to an external.

The multitudes telling you that they get around 10 years out of theirs seems to contradict the “every other year” statement. I don’t doubt you can make a cheaper faster PC. I can’t and have no desire to learn. I also prefer the operating system by an order of magnitude.

There aren’t very many Fender threads? Well I guess I’ll just have to keep going into the Gibson threads to make sure those guys know I still don’t like Gibsons” 🙂

I can’t and have no desire to learn. I also prefer the operating system by an order of magnitude. My last pre unibody and early unibody literally melted and apple fixed them each time until I broke them myself by dropping them. And it still powered on and booted up despite being too dented to lay flat. I have a fat MacBook Pro unibody with a cracked screen and dvd drive replaced with an ssd somewhere that still powers on. IBM and Lenovo Thinkpads I fixed myself then. I had some with broken screens from the 90s that still worked with external displays until a couple years ago. Every other laptop not from Apple and IBM/Lenovo I’ve owned has sucked and had major issues or broke. Desktops, M2 is coming. Price? My i9-12900 build was about 200. Bucks cheaper than a pimped out Mac Studio but more expensive than any other m1 mac. I could have saved 4000 bucks with a mini but would’ve had to freeze more

Perhaps it's because they all mostly use laptops and not desktops, I dunno.

I think generally laptops don’t last quite as long as desktops, but every pro studio around here in Portland is still running a cheese grater. I’m running 2009 Cheese grater and only just pulled the trigger on a new Mac mini because it’s starting to overheat and I long ago maxed out on my OS. I’ve never had that type of reliability from a PC, although I never had a dedicated studio PC either. I’m sure if setup correctly PCs last a long time too.

Their is a distinct part of the Apple market that is buy a Mac simply as fashion, if your part of this group you have to be current. Every major PC Manufacturer would kill for this market, most realize a PC is more of a commodity. Most people I know don’t buy a new Mac till they run into some kind of compatibility issue.
