Windows 10 has decided not to boot on start up anymore. I have tried a couple of the standard YouTube and other internet fixes but to no avail. My question is there any real harm (other than a slight inconvenience) using the boot menu and starting Windows that way? It has been working without issue this way.

I'm mildly interested in why it started doing this though. What's the error you receive, or does it just restart? When did it start happening?

On start up, Windows never shows up and it goes to a screen that tells me to press F1 to get to the set up page. From there I have been just using the boot menu and and clicking my hard drive. Once running, if I restart (not shut down) Windows boots normally. I cant tell you exactly when it started or what I may have done myself to cause this to happen. It has been like this for a while now. As long as I am not in any danger of messing some up really bad, I am not too worried.

It could mean a few different things. The most common is the motherboard battery might be dead and need replacing. It could also mean that something is amiss with the hardware, like it can't see an old floppy drive that has been removed/failed but still listed in the boot order. It could also be that the bios updated during a windows update and lost the original boot sequence settings. It won't hurt windows to boot from the menu, but it could be a sign of something not completely right, but not totally failing.

Is replacing the motherboard battery something a dumbass can do or should said dumbass take it to someone who is more of a smartass?

It's really simple but it will default the MOBO's config, that might not matter though. It's literally a circular car fob style battery, take the old one out and find out what type / size it is then slap another one in.

However, sometimes they put the things in really hard to reach places which could mean disassembly is required. Sometimes not. If the battery was dead, you'd still need to go into the BIOS and change the boot sequence to choose the boot drive first or at least not halting to ask.

Mine was just doing this recently also. Changed the battery( 7yrs old ) Reset the date and time and no problems any more. Opening it up was a good opportunity to blow out the dust. I am surprised there is no warning for low battery
