Greetings.
I've had my pair of the trusty Sony 7506 for probably 10 years. I like everything about them except that ^#^@ half-curly/half-straight &#&^#@ cable. The curly half seems to get caught on something daily and either rips the headphones entirely off my head or spins them halfway around my head ala Daffy Duck's bill when E. Fudd shoots him in the face in the classic cinema trilogy "Duck Season/Wabbit Season." To wit:
Ah, cartoon violence. Anyway..... I'd had enough of the curly cable shenanigans, so I set about to find a solution. There are various YouTube videos showing how to do it. I went with this one:
I used the same Mogami cable mentioned in the video; I got mine from Redco. The entire operation start to finish was about an hour, and a small chunk of that time was wrestling the earpad back into place. Really a simple process and no more headphone-based Looney Tunes episodes when tracking.
For those of you with 7506 headphones and some basic soldering skills, this operation is highly recommended.
Regards, -09

Nice, good call, total cost ? Hey kcatthedog, 12 ft. of Mogami 2893 and a 1/4" TRS Neutrik plug; I think it was around $12. in parts. That's it! So worth it; I feel like I have a new pair of headphones. Of course now I need to replace the earpads.... -09

Eric, what replacement wire would you recommend?
I use the 7506 cans all the time, but I dropped one pair and now it's too bright. I'm guessing that a wire came loose, but I don't know. If a wire was loose, it shouldn't work at all I would think. I'd love to repair it if it isn't a waste of time and it is just the wiring connection. The curly wire doesn't bug me that much.
I guess I'll have to look at it now to see if I notice anything unusual. I have 3 pairs now and rarely use the "bad" pair except on rare occasions.
* I bought a pair recently second hand. It has an ear pad replacement. I replaced the pads on another pair, but the one I just bought has much better replacement pads. They're an ugly maroon color, but they fit around the ear better. The seal feels more complete, a bit tighter, but not uncomfortable at all. I get a better sound because of it.

Not sure what you mean notneeson. I started with two pairs of 7506's years ago. I've replaced the original pads that got all funky. I dropped them both a couple of times, but one in particular is now thin and lacks bass. I've used the "good" pair myself, but when someone else is here tracking a vocal or guitar I give them the "good" pair and have used the bad pair myself. I just bought a pair second hand. It sounds really good, not extra bright, and the replacement pads work better than the original.
I'd like to repair the one that's not fully working. I haven't soldered anything in 30 years though, ugh.. Still, I wouldn't mind fixing that pair.
Even the original one that works properly is a little brighter than the new second hand pair with the maroon colored ear pads. I do wonder if the tighter/better fit is why that pair sounds a bit better or if anything has changed in Sony's design over the years.

Some people love them for that reason.

I can’t find the cable I used to use, it was a generic OFC that was pretty inexpensive and designed for headphones. There are a bunch of audiophile headphone cables out there these days.

They are bright, that's true. They do so many other things right though, that after comparing them to 15 different styles and brands, they were definitely the best. There's a store here
called B&H that has a gigantic selection of electronics. They had around 20 different headphones all set up to grab and try, which was amazing. It was easy to compare that way.

Due to the smiley face freq response fairly good isolation, efficiency and the way they play loud we would simply call them the Drummer headphones.

They can be great for spotting a bad edit too— that top end will make it poke out more than on other systems.

Yes, cans that let edits stick out are worth having as be assured that edit you missed will show up later down the line when you thought all was golden. Cheers, Ross

That's exactly how I use them. After a mix is ready, I make a final check with headphones for edits, background noise, panning, soundstage, etc.

While they don’t have the detail of the Senn., Grados, Beyer’s, and definitely not the ESL’s ( either Monoprice or STAX) I probably use 7506’s more than any phone because I know them better than anything else after 30 years. Add in how easy they are to drive I’ll admit there is a pair sitting here with a lightning adapter heat shrinked to the connector because damn they are great with the I phone.

...snip.... I'd like to repair the one that's not fully working. I haven't soldered anything in 30 years though, ugh.. Still, I wouldn't mind fixing that pair. ....snip!.... Martin John, The soldering for these was super easy. It only took a touch of the iron to the connections on the headphones to remove the old wires, and attaching the new wires was also quick and easy. It took longer to solder the Neurtrik TRS on the other end. -09

Here's a pic with the new pads. Really nice. A bit thicker than the old pads and provides a better seal around my ears, so the isolation is certainly improved. Very comfy. The (real) leather is thin, but not thin in a cheap way; thin in a soft and pliable way. Nicely made. A bit of a wrestling match to get them installed, but a great fit once done. Certainly an upgrade over the stock Sony pads. $20. at amazon: smile.amazon.com/dp/B07MK6B9V4?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details-09

The beyerdynamic velour earpads fit.
7506’s get thinner sounding as they age. Theyll also drop off in volume irregularly with one side louder than the other. If one went brighter after being dropped I’d assume exactly like dropping a speaker; malformed coil in the magnet gap, probably rubbing.

New drivers are about $50ea But phones frequently on sale for $70…. Exactly! But that same driver, which looks like the back is sealed is used in 3 or 4 other consumer models. You think Sony would put any kind of passive filter in there phones to change the response?
