Hey, was looking for a little advice on setting up hardware inserts using PT10 and an Apollo. I can get input into the hardware, but no return signal.

If you go to ua forum universal audio (gannon) posted a detailed example today about this.

If you are using OSX and firewire you will get varying delay ping times, its not an Apollo issue per se but a firewire OSX issue. At least I ran into this a while ago with this configuration, maybe Mavericks fixed it. The required delay compensation will vary slightly just enough to be out of phase. If you are using this setup please post your results, I would like to be able to run some parallel processing, but when I tried I could never get a consistent delay compensation. I read online this was a OSX firewire issue. Good Luck.

Have they changed their position? When I was buying, UA said they wouldn't support the use of the IO as hardware inserts in any software. I just thought "huh?" and moved on....

So, did you try what the UA guy suggested? Did it work after rebooting/recalling the session without drift in phase?

From ua forum; aligning i/o protools/ apollo:
"In Pro Tools you can use the 8 analog output individually + 2 monitor outputs, you can also use the eight inputs and output for using with external hardware effect. Go to Set Up menu then I/O... (Set Up>I/O...) Then go to Insert menu. There you will find a grid which represent the Input/Output settings for your inserts in PT. The first stereo analog I/O (Analog 1-2) don't touch it (it is reserved for output monitoring) but rename Analog 3-4 "Insert 1-2" and then Analog 5-6 "Insert 3-4" etc... If you don't have enough Outputs on the grid click on "New Path" and choose stereo then name it. Drag the "L" and the "R" in the grid to the good position (after the last outputs).
Now you can go to the Output menu, erase all path in the grid and click default. Now your Inserts, Inputs and Outputs in Pro Tools fit the Apollo Inputs and Outputs. "

kcatthedog I'm sorry, but I'm not following you here. Could you elaborate a bit more? It seems doing it this way shifts everything.

hey,
That is a post from the ua forum. Apparently the default i/o on the apollo is not set up properly in PT even with the PT mode.
So, this process aligns it all, is my understanding.
I checked this with Gannon at UA and he agreed and does the same technique.
I just use a patchbay .
