here is an update from Gannon at UA from the UA forum site:
"Hi all,
Let me take another pass at this. Sorry for all the confusion surrounding this issue. We've tried really hard to make this clear on the support pages, but since it does change things, I can certainly understand it!
The easiest way to describe what works with what (and this will hold true going forward for future releases as well) is this is by looking at the two versions of the release as separate entities.
Version 7.7.0
- Supports all UAD-2 products and Apollo/Apollo 16. (That means PCIe cards, Satellite, Apollo and Apollo 16 with or without Thunderbolt option cards)
- Compatible with Mac and Windows computers
- Supports Thunderbolt and FireWire with Apollo in the following ways:
- You can connect Apollo directly to the computer with FireWire, and the FireWire ports on Apollo are active
- You can connect Apollo directly to the computer with Thunderbolt and the FireWire ports on Apollo are active (Apollo can act as a FireWire hub)
- This version uses FireWire audio drivers over Thunderbolt for Apollo/Apollo 16, FireWire for Satellite and does not support Apollo Twin.
Version 7.7.1
- Supports all UAD-2 products, Apollo Twin and Apollo/Apollo 16 with Thunderbolt Option Cards. (PCie cards must be in Thunderbolt chassis because there are no Mac towers with PCIe slots and Thunderbolt. FireWire Satellite can connect as shown below)
- Compatible with Mac computers only
- Supports Thunderbolt and FireWire with Apollo in the following ways:
- You must connect Apollo to the Mac via Thunderbolt and the FireWire ports on Apollo are not active
- You can connect FireWire devices to the second Thunderbolt port on Apollo using the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter (uses FW over TB)
- You can connect FireWire devices directly to the Mac if it has a FireWire port or using the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter
- You can use a FireWire Satellite in conjunction with Apollo Twin via the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter, or connect directly to the Mac if it has a FireWire port
- This version uses PCIe audio drivers over Thunderbolt for Apollo/Apollo 16/Apollo Twin and FW drivers for Satellite
I think that covers all of the connection permutations - hope it helps!
