This union topic seems to have ignited a lot of passion on both sides of the aisle. I have my own strong feelings about unions in general, but perhaps we should try to keep this thread more about session musicians, regardless of whether or not they belong to the Musician's Union. I could discuss unions in another off-topic thread, if others would like to.

There are websites and agencies that find chinese musicians for hire.. And there are companies that use Malaysian children to sew t-shirts...That doesn't make it right. But man, if you've got it down at your place, then go for it...no skin off my back. Just don't complain about the price of session musicians if you aren't going to use them. I'd love to use more session musicians, but if they all end up at rates like that, i couldn't possibly use them. Maybe it's the location or something? Anyway, if i needed them and all their rates were like you say, I'd lose sessions over it, and the session musicians would lose my business. Maybe I'm too small for them to care about, but i think if they kept turning down regular work for a few high paying gigs, they'd eventually be out of work too. |
