Brice and those Audient pres! LOL They're like the Rodney Dangerfield of preamps. No respect! Really? I actually feel like the Audient Pres are really really respected. The 880 and 800 are some of the most recommended pieces of gear on forums and I know from a dealer friend that the Audient rack preamps are pretty much the best selling outboard preamp, at least here in the EU, huge hit for the brand!

Sorry for an obvious question but why do you need a Big SIX? For the analog summing, pre amps multi-channel ADA .... I do get it's very good value for money. I'd love to move back to a desk again, but given the gear I have in my room and the way I mix inside Cubase with Console 1 - UAD plugins - Fader Port 16 and a Crane Song Avocet for monitoring I'd need the SSL Origin and at $50K starting without the looms and patchbay unless I win of the Lotto it isn't going to happen. I've bought / sold / tested a lot of equipment over the last 25 years and its cost me a fortune. I can't get along with direct to interface / plugs as I was never happy with the results. My most recent setup was Shelford's / 6176's into an Apollo X w/ UA-2 plugs and it did sound good but I found it so much easier with my old SSL 4K + outboard setup (which would now be overkill to the nth degree). Over the last 5 years I've been testing and buying equipment that will last me forever (monitors, mic's, HW, even houses). So far I have around 20 pieces of high end HW but they're just sat collecting dust. I need something to route all of this HW together and the SSL seems to be the easiest way to do it without en mass looms, massive (and sometimes consistent) repair costs and sacrificing too much workflow (as the board is quite simple). I have no issues with surgical EQ and automation ITB but once it's in the analogue domain I want it to stay there until mix down.. Ideally I'd have 16 channels (with inserts), a proper EQ section on each, at least 2 FX returns AND aux busses. Although at a certain point you can end up with 30+ options on every channel that leads to recall nightmare, so I'm sorta torn about the limitations of the SSL.. I love its simplicity but I also dislike it for the exact same reasons. Anyway, I've figured out how to make a full rock band mix work on this desk and keep it OTB.. Took a while though. In terms of tracking I'll never need more than 8 inputs, I'm a home recorder nowadays so it's one instrument at a time.. Great reply, thank you. It's given me food for thought!

So I am now beginning a mix/project using the Big Six. I have my 500 series inserted on the master with the 542's, Ultraviolet EQ, Xpressor and LH95's eq's.
I am using buses for 1) Drum/Bas, 2) Vocals, 3) Guitar, 4) Keys, 5) Higher Freq stuff and a 6) Pass through for effects. That is 6 stereo pairs with 1) and 2) using the full channels. I am starting the mix seeing how far I can go - top down on B6 and 500 rack. I have some B6 channel EQ and compression, the simpler SSL bus compressor with auto release, red silk on 542's, 1 click on bottom and 2 clicks on top with the LH95's and back in the DAW, tickling the meters with the SHMC. Not a bad beginning point at all. Everything is full and punchy.
I like the simpler 3-band ssl eq (would love if they were standard 4-band). A little goes a long way. Bus compressor is punchy. I don't think I can say that I immediately hear a difference summing in the mixer. Don't have time to fart around with tests but I do appreciate the onboard EQ, compression and insert ability. Love the red silk on mix bus and the LH95's are just killer - beefy and smooth. The SHMC adds punch and weight, even if tickling it's fake plugin meters - lol.

I just thought to check this and will share that the EQs on the big six channels are more aggressive than the Ultraviolet EQ. they are set at 60, 700 and 3.5KH (odd choice but it works). Of course the UVEQ500 has many EQ band selection points and is much gentler. What /i love about the UVEQ is the Q's on the 2 mid bands. It really helps to tackle master bus midrange issues.

Will be fierce competition for the upcoming Alice boards. I just wish this had more pres. If it had 8 and adat ins/outs I’d cop. What are the upcoming Alice boards? I have a 1 year old 828 for sale. I really like it, sounds great, well made. But selling to invest in an Iron Age project Edit: Just saw your comment was quite old. Haha! I’m guessing you were referring to the 828
